Dairy Herd Decreasing The nation's dairy herd is the smallest since 1887 and will probably continue to de cline, along with the number of dairy farmers. Fortunately, milk produc tion per cow is increasing It gained about 1.5 percent last year while cow numbers de clined 2.8 percent. Milk production for 1969 was down 1 percent. prices increased to $6.87 per 100 pounds. North Carolina prioes for fluid milk for bottling were set at $7.40 per 100 pounds last February, a rise of 45 cents. Class II milk price was raised to $4.20, 30 cents higher. Through September, blend prices in North Carolina aver aged $6.97 per hundredweigit for milk of average test, 5.1 percent over 1968. Production increased 1.2 percent while sales of fluid milk and cream to consumers declined slightly Blend prices for 1970 are expected to be as high or high er than in 1969, North Caro - lina State University econo - mists estimate. Consumption is likely to change very little. The number of dairy farmers will continue to decrease, but probably at a slower rate than in the past. Over the three to five-year period, milk prices are expeo ted to rise as farmers "are squeezed on the cost side," the economists say. North Caro lina is expected to stabil i z e its milk production at about current levels at prices which reflect prices in the midwest, plus transportation.
