Fire Department Works To Extinguish Blaze
Better Business Bureau
Warns Os Contest Gimmick
Deceptive contests are be
ing used to lure customers into
buying sewing machines or
stereo consoles at inflated pri
ces, the Better Business Bureau
said today in the public wamiqg
R.E. Hitchcock, Managing
Director of the Bureau, said the
promotions promise to award
winners machines either "free"
or at substantial savings.
As usual, according to the
EBB, there is a gimmick.
In some promotions, notices
are mailed telling recipients of
their "lucky" telephone num
ber or license number which
now entitles them to a "free"
sewing machine or stereo. The
catch is that they must buy a
"service and instruction policy 1
to receive the prize. The value
of the merchandise is stated to
be far greater than the cost of
the policy. The Better Business
Bureau says the "nationally ad
vertised price" of the merchan
dise is inflated and not one es
tablished in the marketplace.
Another type of promotion
is a simple puzzle that offers a
sewing machine as first prize &
a "discount certificate" as se
cond prize. 888 says that near
ly every participant receives a
certificate, regardless of whe
ther he gave the right answer.
As in other contests,the value
of the prize is said to be based
on "nationally advertised pri
ces", which the 888 says are
fictitious and usually inflate d
several times over the prices at
which the sewing machines ac
tually are being sold.
A promotion thought to have
started on the West Coast sends
slot maChina symbols, minla
ture hands, or a list of
numbers arranged to look like
a lottery listing.
Thus a "winning hand," "a
lucky number" or 11 jackpot!’
entitles the recipient to a ’free!’
sewing machine or stereo con
sole (provided he buys a "ser -
vice and instruction policy" or
the required number of record
albums), a discount
or a combination of both.
Sometimes a bottle of per
fume and a "free Las Vegas va
cation" are thrown in. These
"vacations" normally are fi -
nanced partially by the custo -
mar, who pays a sl2 or sls
registration fee, and partially
by real estate promoters, who
require the recipient to list e n
to a sales pitch.
The "free vacation"amounts
to only a discount on the room
rental, with the "winner" pay
ing the round-trip fare, meals,
tips and taxes.

Local Home
Destroyed
By Blaze
By Carolyn Yuziuk
Last Sunday afternoon at
approximately 3: 30 p. m. a
frame house on Greenmountain
Street in Burnsville,the rented
home of Mr. and Mrs. Britt
Mitchell and their four young
children, burst into flames.
The old frame house, which
had no electricity, no wateq
and only a fireplace for heat
ing, was completely destroyed.
Origin of the fire is unknown,
but whatever the cause, the
house was almost immediately
enveloped in flames and burned
rapidly until the Fire Depart
ment arrived at the scene and
brought the holocaust under
control.
Fortunately, the Mitchells,
who were at home when the
fire started, had only their
youngest child at home w ith
them at the time, or real tra
gedy might have ensued. Mrs.
Mitchell's hair was singed bad
ly, but the two adults and their
baby daughter managed to es
cape serious injury.
The blackened, mined tim
bers framing the house are all
that is left now of the Mtchett
dwelling. Ironically, the min
stands next to the site where
another similar dwelling was
destroyed by fire more than a
year ago. The ruin stood for
mar;y months as a bleak remii>
der of fire's terrible capabili -
ties until it was finally razed
last summer as a hazard and an
eyesore.
