three counties to review pros
pects for getting aid for the
road project under the Appa -
lachian program.
Tarrent stated that this high
way project has the endorse
ment of the Governors of both
North Carolina and Tennessee,
and now stands on the Appa -
lachian Commission list of
important needed highway im
provements.
The outlook for financing
with Federal funds remains un
changed. Congress has not
yet appropriated sufficient mo
ney to complete the main Ap
palachian corridor system, and
financing 19E prior to comple
tion of the primary corridor is
extremely doubtful.
At the same time, some
Federal funds are now avail -
able for building access roads,
and it appears that a Spruce
Pine By-pass may qualify for
this aid. The justification of
this expenditure would be in
improving the accessibility of
the projected new Techni cal
Institute which is to be loca -
ted near Spruce Pine.
Among those who spoke
for the need for improvement
of 19E were Jim
Ted Dent, Bud Talley, Bill
Wilkins, and Miss Ruthjohnxn.
