The Yancey Cotmtyjaycees
and Jaycettes gave a tea July
in the Community Building
for the contestants represen -
ting Yancey County in-- the
Miss Mayland Pageant.

County are Linda Deyton, the
daughter of Mr. and Mis. O.
W. Deyton of Burnsville; Pat
sy Briggs, daughter of Mr. and
Mis, Joe Briggs of Burnsville;
Joan Atkins, daughter of Mr.
and Mis. Edgar Atkins of Pen
sacola.
The "Miss Mayland" Beauty
Pageant, sponsored by Spruce
Pinejaycees, Avery County
Jaycees and Yancey County
Jaycees, will be held on July
Burnsville Men’s CM Picnic
The Burnsville Men's Club;
together with member's wives,
children and guests, will hold
their annual summer picnic
on the coming Monday even
ing, July 26, at the Black
Mountain Camp in the Game
Refuge. This is the same lo
cation where the picnic has
been held in previous years.
The feature of the supper
will be baibecued chicken pre
pared by the club's veter ar;
expert outdoor cooks, led by
Jim Covington, E. L. Dilling -
ham and Ned Jestes. Supper
will be served at 7

activities starting soon after

School auditorium in Spruce
Pine, N.C. Thirteen girls
are representing Yancey, Mit
chell and Avery Counties.
Contestants will be Judged
in swim suits, evening gown%
and talent. The winner will
be a representative for the
three counties in the 1971 Miss
North Carolina Pageant.
To avoid confusion, the
pageant, which has always
been conducted in Spntae Pine
as the most convenient or
central location in the three
counties, was for the past se
veral years known as the 'Miss
Spruce Pine" pageant, althagi
contestants horn all 3 coun -
3 o'clock.
The picnic is planned as a
family affair, with entertain
ment for children as well as
adults, including volley ball,
soft ball and horseshoe pitch -
ing.
Members are urged to bring
guests.
Legion Mane
The American Legion and
Auxiliary annual picnic will
be held at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. George W. Roberts on
Tuesday, July 28 at 7:00 p. m.
All veterans and their families
are invited to attend and bring
their picnic supper.

Prospects Seem Good For
Water System Improvement

The prospect for financing
the improvement and enlarge
ment of the Burnsville water
system has brightened appre
ciably. The Town Board is
applying to the North Carolina
Local Government Commission
for authority to hold a bond
election for authorizing the
borrowing of up to $230,000t0
finance the water project.
Mayor James Anglin, Com
missioner Bob Helmle and Town
attorney, Dover Fouts,recent
ly reviewed the financial as
pects of the project in Raleigh
with Local Government Com
mission officials. It appeared
from this conference that the
Town's present financial posi
tion would permit undertaking

"Arms And The Man", the
popular light comedy by George
Bernard Shaw,who isconside*d
the greatest British playwright
of modem times, is the cur
rent production showing at the
Parkway Playhouse. Though
it is the fourth play Shaw wrote,
