Luke Atkinson, Republican
candidate for the 11th Con -
gressional District, toured
Yancey County last Friday ac
companied by local sheriff
Kermit Banks.
Atkinson, who owns a fur
niture store in Asheville and
is a member of the Asheville
City Council, also talked with
businessmen and farmers in
Yancey in an effort to see
what issues concern them and
get their viewpoint.
Following the tour, Atkin
son met for lunch at the Am
berjack Restaurant with seve
ral interested citizens and
discussed his own views.
He was interviewed by Ra
dio Station WKYK later Fri -
day afternoon.
Visitors from Asheville at
the luncheon were Dan Eller,
Jay Hensley and Doris Foster.

Voters Favor Bond Issue
139-8 In Special Election
Burnsville voted overwhel -
mingly in a special election cn
Tuesday to authorize a bond
issue of $230,000 to raise the
town's portion of the cost of
enlarging and impcoving its
water system. The vote . was
139 to 8 in favor of the propo
sal when the ballots were in.
With less than six per cent
of the votes in opposition, th«

In Accident
William Dean Briggs, 23, of
Burnsville Route l,was fatally
injured in a one-car accident
on N.C. 197 about three miles
north of Burnsville early Sunday.
State Trooper A. T. Canipe,
who investigated the accident,
said a physician estimated that
Briggs died about 2a. m. on
Sunday.
The trooper said the carvns
rounding a left-hand curve
when it ran off the right side,
through a barbed wire f e nee
and down an embankment, and
overturned in a field. It ap
peared that Briggs had been
thrown out of the car through
the rear window of the coupe
he was occupying. Briggs was
alone in the car at the time
of the accident.

East Yancey High ran into a
determined Mashall team on
Friday nigbt which held them
to but one score—a five yard
scamper by quarterback Ken
neth Winter* in the third quar
ter—but it was enough for an
8-0 victory.
The night's only score star
ted with a 61 -yard run to the
Tornadoes five yard line by
Panther halfback Randy Hanks
at the start of the third quarter.
