Craig Jenkins of Ce lo was killed when the car hev/as driv ing apparently skidded off of Highway 80 and hit a tree. The road was wet at the time due to a light rain. In the car with him was Dee Harrison, also of Yancey Coun ty, who was taken to an Ashe - vise Hospital. The wreck occurred just South of the South Toe River School. First Saewfall Snow fell in Yancey County early Wednesday morning, getting the win ter season off to a good start. Continuing cold weather is forecasted. THE UNITED WAY Yancey Candidates Run Tight Race Local unofficial election results were tabulated early Wednesday morning, ending a hard-fought battle between the Yancey County Republican and Democratic Parties. Incumbent Sheriff, Kermit Banks (R) retained his position and Arnold Higgins (R) was Jenkins is survived by his wife and three children. He worked as a distributor of ever greens. Baßding Burns A storage building belong - ing to Mr. Dewey Robinson of Micaville was completely de stroyed by fire on Tuesday at approximately 7:30 p. m. The building was used as an evergreen storage house Most of the Galax leaves were removed to safety in time, as were the few tools kept in the building. When the Newdale Fire De partment arrived, the building was already completely en - gulfed by flames and efforts to save the building were useless. These groups are donating their time and talent, thus making it possible for all the gate re- in area competition later this month. Youth judging will al so be later in November. The County Community Awards Program will be a co vered dish supper to be held at the South Toe Elementary School Saturday, November 7 at 6:00 p. m. Winners in the Awards Program will be an nounced by Mr. Bob Helmle. Mr. Morris L. McCough, Exec utive Vice President of the Asheville Agricultural Efevelop ment Council will speak to the group. The singing groups who will participate are the following: Bee Log Quartet from Yancey County, The Gospelaires Quar tet from Spruce Pine,The South Quartet from Erwin, T ennessee, TKe little Creek Quartet from Yancey County, The Clark Sis ters from Hampton, Tennessee, The Rebels Creek Quartet from Bakexsville, The Gospel Trio from Johnson City, and the Morning Star Youth Band. The singing event is being widely publicized, and a very large turnout is expected. Will Bennett has mailed out over 8,000 circulars advertising the event to box holders in Yancey, Mitchell and Madison Counties. The United Fund Honor 801 l shown elsewhere in this issue, has now expanded to include thirteen businesses, offices and schools. The UF committee recognizes that there may be some omissions from the list, due to failure of reports to come in. Man Killed la Trailer Blaze A Micaville man was burned to death around 11:00 p. m. Tues day night when a fire destroyed his mobile home. Lee Boone was apparently alone in his home on Plum Branch Road when it caught on fire. Origin of the blaze is un known at this time. According to Newdale Fire Chief, Charles Crowder, the Fire Department was summoned by a neighbor. The trailer was already consumed by the flames when they reached it. The Burnsville Fire Department arrived shortly afterwards and stood by to help if needed. 10<
