Ray, Executi v e Secretary of Yancey C ounty Local Board No. 101,announced today that Selective Service po licies have been revised to al low a registrant classified in 11-S, I-S(C), I-S(H), n- A, m-A (Hardship), or HI- A (Fa therhood) to drop his defermait in favor of a I-A classification, provided the registrant requests in writing that his current de ferment be cancelled. This change in policy Aould be of particular interest, Miss Ray said, to selective service registrants who hold 1970 lot tery, numbers higher than the highest number reached by the board. As of November 1,19- 70, Miss Ray stated that the highest lottery number reached by this local board is 171. "It is not anticipated,"Mbs Ray added, "that this local board will exceed number 171 as a high for this calendar'year; therefore, It will probably be to the advantage for a regis - trant who holds a 1970 lottery number, and who is currently deferred in 11-S, I-S(H),I-S(C) 11-A, IH-A(Hardship),or m-A (Fatherhood), to request the board to cancel his deferment if he has a-lottery number that is higher than 171." Miss Ray further pointed cut that if such a request is recei ved by the hoard from such a registrant, he will be reclass ified in I-A. This action will permit the registrant to be placed in a lower draft priori ty during 1971. "It is, however, most im- portant, " Miss Ray Added, "that any registrant who de sires to make such a request to do so Immediately. This will assure the registrant that the board will have an oppor - tunity to act on his request in either November or Dec." While recognizing that young men holding lottery numbers over their local heard "high" could effectively limit their vulnerability to the draft by being classified into I-A by the year's end, Miss Ray stated that "the law allows young men to elect whether they will apply for a defer ment and, therefore, those young men who are grant e d deferments should be able to drop them if they desire." "Our purpose," she added, "is to achieve fairness to all registrants in determining heir priority status on January 1 of the New Year, and to limit whenever possible the uncer tainty and anxieties that young men with high lottery numbers may have." Miss Ray further stated that if any registrant of this local board has a question concern ing the best procedure for him to follow, he should vi sit the local board office for information. Motorola Has Contract The Nsrthwest Planning Coun cil for Crime Deterrence has awarded a $500,000.00 con tract to Motorola Electronics to provide a Law Enforcement Communications System for nine Northwest North Carolina Counties. These nine counties are: Watauga, Ashe, Allegha ny, Wilkes, Surry, Yadkin, Avery, Mitchell and Yancey. Approximately seventy re presentatives from these nine counties attended the meeting to award the contract to Motor ola. The meeting was held Friday evening, November 20, at Appalachian State Univ. County Control Centen will be installed in the counties of Watauga, Ashe, Surry,Yadkin, and Wilkes. These centers will allow all law enforcement com munications to be centrally re ceived and dispatched. Tape recorders will record all incom ing calls to the center, provi - ding an accurate record of the telephone calls. The award - ing of this contract is the result of almost two years of planning. Funds for the Communications System have been awarded through the federal "Omnibus Crime and Safe Street Act" passed in 1968. He FtSH MOTH IS a ftsH op A moth! , s i tvf* fi } h ;
