Florida was the leading source of inquiries for travel in formation on North Carolina in 1970 according to the De partment of Conservation and Development's Travel and Promotion Division. Bill F. Hensley, director of the Travel and Promotion Division, announced that residents of the Sunshine State accounted for 26,574 inquiries during the year. Os the 151,893 inquiries received by the Dirts i0n,17,981 were from North Carolinians planning trips within their own state. Georgia was second in inquiries with 12,298. Ohio was third with 10,183, Virginia fourth with 9,9993, and Mary land with 8,630 rounded out the top five. A special "Autumn" newspaper advertising supplement drew 47,272 inquiries. The supplement appeared in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Cincinnati Enquirer, Miarri Herald, St. Petersburg Times, Tampa Tribune and Times and the Washington Post. A surprise was the unusually "strong showings" of Cali fornia (2,646), Texas (2,937), and Indiana (2,438), ac cording to Hensley. All three states outdrew neighboring South Carolina and Tennessee. Eighty-nine foreign countries requested information on travel opportunities in the Tar Heel State. Canada was the leading producer of foreign inquiries with 3,851. One real surprise was the drop in ranking by New York The Errpire State has either led or been second every year since 1960. This year New York was sixth. Rounding out the top ten were Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Illinois and Michigan. Hensley said he was especially pleased with the high ranking of Kentucky, Wisconsin, Alabama, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Louisiana, Missouri and West Virginia. Inquiry Tabulation 1970 1.
