The East Yancey Panthers
won three exciting basketb a 11
games from Bakersville last
Friday night, January 15.
The East Yancey Jr. Varsity
defeated the Bakersville JV ' s
by a score of 38 to 31.
In the girls' game, Sharon
Laws and Donna Parker, both
scoring 16 points, lead the Lady
Panthers to a 49 to 24 victory
over the Bakersville girls. Tina
Geouge and Debbie Thomas
both played outstanding de -
sense for the Lady Panthers.
In one of the most exciting
games played this year, East
Yancey came back from a 13
point deficit to defeat the Bull
dogs 39 to 38. The Panthers
experienced their co ldest first
half of the season. Jim Norris
led the East Yancey scoring
with 13 points while Forrest
Westall netted 9 points.
Coach Banks stated that the
team spirit was 100% plus dur
ing the second half of the game.
Coach Banks would like to ex
press his thanks to the fans for
the loyal support they gave the
team.

Club Met

makers Club was held Tuesday,
January 12 with Mrs. Herman
Howell, President, presiding.
During the business meeting
the club voted to continue the
project this year of making im
provements to the communi
ty building.
The program, "Medical Ex

ketbook" was presented by Ms.
Mary M. Deyton, Home Eco -
nomics Extension Agent.

4-H Clover Club Meets ;
Burnsville's 4-H Clover
Club met with 9 members in
attendance on January 11. Pre
sident Debby Woody was un
able to attend so Mrs. Guyer
led the group in the Pledge of
Allegiance to the flag and the
4-H Pledge. Secretary Delo
res Lewis called the roll, read
the minutes, and collected the
dues.
Instead of having a program

at this meeting, the club dis
cussed its plans for the coming
year. Becoming a chartered
club is one of the most impor
tant objectives the members
want to work toward, fro grams
for the next 12 months were
lined up. The club decided
to ask various professional peo
ple in the community to speak
at its meetings from time to
time. Such a guest speaks
will be featured at the Febru -
ary meeting.
Mr. Patrick Guyer explain
ed some of the special advan
tages of 4-H to the girls and
told them to be thinking of
Camp to be held at Sc h aub
4-H Camp in June.

Paul Laughrun has been re -
elected and John Ramsey has
been elected directors of the
Asheville Agricultural Develop
ment Council for 1971 repre
senting Yancey County. The
election took place at the an
nual meeting of the 18-county
association for area develop -
ment in Asheville recently.
The Agricultural C ouncil
was organized 21 years ago as
a "partneiship for progress" be
tween the rural people, the
agricultural agencies, business
and industry in Western North
Carolina. Purpose is to pro
mote farm and rural develop
ment projects. A major pro
ject from the beginning has
been sponsoring the WNC Com
munity Development Program
