Ramsey And Messer Sponsor Bill To Help Finance Establishment Os Tri County Technical Institute By Bob Helmle An important step toward establishment of the proposed technical institute to serve the three counties, Yancey,Mitch ell and Avery, is being taken in the session of the General Assembly now getting under way in Raleigh. Representa - tive Liston Ramsey has sent word that he and Representa - IMarch Os Dimes Gospel Sing The annual Gospel Sing for the March of Dimes will be held at the Asheville City Au ditorium on Saturday,January 30, 1971 at 7:30 p. m. There will be no admission ch a rge, but an opportunity will be pro vided for those who wish to make a contribution. All singers and all who are working on the project are do nating their time. All proceed from the Gospel Sing will go to the Buncombe County March of Dimes. The March of Dimes works to treat birth defects. They also work to prevent birth de fects. The proposed bill appropri ates SIOO,OOO for each of the two fiscal years beginning July 1, 1971. This is the estima - ted amount that will be nee - ded from State funds to get the school started. The State Board of Educa - tion approved the request of the three counties for a techni cal school a year ago. This approval was one of the major hurdles to overcome in obtain ing the institute in this area. Based on precident of previous sessions of the General Assem bly this backing by the State school authorities gives virtual assurance that the appropria - tion will be voted. The Mountain Scenic Plan ning and Development Com mission, of which Bill Wilkins is chairman, deserves credit for carrying the major part of the load in preparing the ap plication and otherwise pro moting the project. For moa than two years interested citi zens have been working toward establishing the much needed school. Financing of the operating expense of a technical insti - tute comes from three sources. Roughly 60 per cent c o mas from the State, 20 per cent from student fees and 20 per cent from the local counties. Mrs. Vemie Wilson will be in charge of the pro - gram. Mrs. Wilson attended a se - minar on Drug Abuse at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill this past summer and will present some high lights of that study course. She attended under the sponsorship of the Yancey County Board of Education. Included in her pxqyamwill be a showing of the film enti tled "Marijuana". All parents and other inter ested persons are urged to at tend this important presentation which should clarify many ques tions on the use of mari j u ana or other drugs. Burnsville Boy Scout Troop Holds Investiture Ceremony Boy Scout Troop #SO 2, Burnsville, N. C. had its first Court of Honor and Tenderfoot Investiture Ceremony on Jan uary 21, 1971, at Higgins Me morial Methodist Church. The Scout Troop was organized ear ly this winter and consists of 30 active boys. The Investi - ture Ceremony was held to honor 14 scouts who had at tained the rank of Tenderfoot. The boys were presented with badges of rank and necker - chiefs. Each boy present e d his mother with a pin of the Tenderfoot rank. Boys achiev ing the rank of Tend erfoot ing. Financing of the school building should receive major assistance from the Federal Appalachian program. Wilbur Howard, Dr.lergus Pope, Judge J. Ray Braswell, Sheriff Kermit Banks, Rev. Don Elly and Miss Wanda Edwards will participate in a panel discus sion dealing with the role of the Church in making our com munity a better place to live. The discission will consider the functions and nature of so cial agencies in the communi ty and will seek to disc over ways in which the Church can add her influence to the hel ping ministry. Possibilities for cooperation and understanding between the Church and other helping professions will be con sidered. This program is open to the public and everyone is invited to attend. A Court of Honor was held to present Scout Ernie Howard with the rank of Life Scout. This is an extremely rank which very few scouts attain. The badge of rank was presen ted by Superintendent landrum Wilson. Ernie is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Howard of Burnsville. Mis. Howard was presented a mother’s pin. Other Scouts receiving awards were John Blair-4 years Service Star; Ernie Howard - 4 years Service Star and 2 me rit badges; Kenny Deyton - 3 years Service Star and 1 merit badge; Randy Thomas-2 years Service Star. The Troop was also presen ted an American flag that was flown over the White House. The flag was obtained through the office of Congressman Roy A. Taylor. About 60 parents and friends attended the ceremony. They were served refreshments and given demonstrations by the Scouts following the ceremony. ★ Scoots Plan Paper Drive The Burnsville Boy Scouts will begin pickup of old news papers and coat hangers on Fe bruary 6. The purpose of the project is to raise money to purchase much needed equip ment for the Troop. The Troop asks that every one start saving their old news papers, magazines, and coat hangers for this purpose. The time and dates will be published when pickup will be made for various parts of the town. ★ Boy Scout Hike By Todd Bailey On Saturday, January 23, the Boy Scout Troop #so2went on a 5-mile hike into Linville Gorge. At the bottom of the Gorge they cooked lunch. The troop was accompan - led by leaders John McLain and Forrest McCall and the Reve - rend Harold McDonald. 10<
