ca as it was in the time of Ten
nyson, forms the basis for Ar
thur E. Sutherland's discussion
in his book, An Apology For
Uncomfortable Change.
No one enjoys being uncom
fortable, and since change al
ways brings a certain amount
of discomfort, the author stats
that in America we all gp about
our way of life pretending that
nothing has changed. We need
to be educated in what is under
our eyes. We are dismayed and
reluctant to admit that some
things to which we have be
come deeply accustomed are
not permanent. We yearn for
the good old days of the lowly
thatched cottage with birds sing
ing outside the window, all of
which brought a peace of mind
better than any present- day
tranquilizer. Yet, in our hearts
we know that the man with the
hoe has given way to an elec-

continuing uncertainty that ac
companies all change. "But
our ancestors were at home in
uncertainty, and they built a
civilization in the faith that
when the future came itwould
be good. We may well gam
ble on that chance; the other
