Fourteen Yancey County homemakers have en rolled in a Trunk Renovation Workshop to be held on May 11, 9:00 a. m. to 3:00 p. m.at the First Presbyterian Church base ment. These family heirlooms cannot only give interest and beauty but also add extra stor age for linens, blankets,out-of season clothes, momentos,sil ver and of course, toys. Stout Nows The Cub Scouts of Den I, Pack 504, have had some very interesting trips. They visited the Science Fair at Cane River High School, and enjoyed see ing pottery being made by Mr. and Mrs. James K. McWhirtesr. They would like to thank the McWhirtexs for a very interes ting afternoon. The boys of Den I are Randy Laughrun, Ro bert Proffitt, Stanley Higgins, Jerry Layell, Jimmy Roland, Sam Young and Gregory' Wes tall. Dean’s List Academic honois at Western Carolina University have been conferred upon 7 students from Yancey County, according to an announcement by Dr. W. Newton Turner, vice preskfent for academic affairs. They are on the dean's list for the winter quarter of the current academic year. The students are Mark W. A recent Pancake Sapper sponsored by the Burnsville Lions Club was successful in raising funds for the “Girls Haven" project. A check for *178.50 was presented to So cial Services Director Randall Peacock by Lion Treasurer Arney Fox as a result of this effort. This represented almost 100% of the money taken in since practically all of the material for the supper was donated. We feel that they deserve cur respect, affection, and gratitude..." The Festival of Friendship which will take place from 10 a. m. to 3p. n. on the Town Square provides an op portunity to fulfill the resolu - tion. It will be a day of cele bration with picnic, entertain ment, games, contests,awards and displays. One of the unique features of the day long celebration will be a "buddy system". One senior citizen who is able to get around well will be a budly for the day’s festivities to ano ther senior citizen who needs some help. Buddies will stick close together throughout the day. In this way many senior citizens who are able to get out can be a great help to others not as fortunate as they. What is needed to make the "buddy system" operate are volunteers who will serve as buddy on that day. If you are interested in being a buddy or if you know someone who needs a ride please call 682-2134. Homemakers Workshops Eight homemakers have completed an advanced tailor ing course taught by the Home Economics {Extension Ag e n ts, Mary Margaret Deyton and Carol Pyle. These are Mrs. Bruce Bailey, Mrs. Craig Eng lish, Mrs. Claude Ledford, Mrs. John Blair, Mrs. Henry Stamey, Mrs. Arthur Letterman,and Mrs. Hershel Holcombe. Other training opportunities on schedule for the sum mer months include Clothing Con struction, pattern fitting and alterations, and advanced tai- New Pastor Cane River Baptist Church has a new pastor, the Rever end James Lamb from S wanna noa. He has been withtte con gregation only a few weeks and already the attendance is in creasing greatly. They hope it will continue to do so. Sunday morning services sre at 11KX3 a. m. and evening ser vices begin at 7:30. Each Wednesday night at 7:00 p. m. is Visitation. The Bob Ramsey Trio will be at the church on July 11. The church is planning to have a "Singing Convention" every 4th Sunday night. Ham Supper! The Clearmont School PTA is sponsoring a Ham Supper Saturday, May 15th. Serving time is from 5:30 to 8:30p.m. in the school luncliroom. You» may have your choice of bev erage and dessert. Prices are: Aduits--$1.50; Students 12 or over—sl.oo; Students un der 12— 755. An advanced tailoring workshop will begin on August 18 and continue each Wednesday for six weeks. Homemakers who are inter ested and have not already en rolled in the workshops may sign up at the County Exten sion Office or by phoning 682- 2113. Enrollment will be on a first come, first serve basis. Garden Club Members of the Garden Club met Friday night, April 30, at the home of Mr. Troy Ray with Mrs. W. L. Bennett co-hostess. Mrs. Brooks Wil son, president, calledthe meet ing to order. The Sec ret ary read the minutes and the Trea surer's report was given. Year ly dues were paid. The street signs was the subject of dis cussion in connection with the clean up and beautification program. Mis. David Powers presen ted a program on Shells. In her large collection she had shells from many' places aroind the world, As each one ws presented the name was given and the place where it was found. Thirteen members and two visitors enjoyed the social hour. Gets Top Honor William H. Buckner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Buckner of Route 3, Burnsville, is one of the students at North Caro lina State University'at Raldgh elected to membership in Hii Kappa Phi, the top national scholastic honorary' at that school. The honored students were initiated Tuesday' night, April 20, in the Erdahl-Cloyd Union, William is majoring in ag ricultural education.
