The meeting took place Wednesday at 4 p. m. Mr. Pat Guycr and Miss Carol Pyle were at the meet ing along with Mr. Charles Hopson, club leader. Mr. Guycr showed the 4-H members a film on insect col lecting projects. He also show ed a film concerning Camp Schaub, the camp chosen by the county for annual 4-H Camp, The camp will be held the second week in June. Brush Creek's next meeting will be July 14th. MAY 20, 1971 High School 'Happenings’ East Yancey By Ernie Howard The North Carolina Rhodo dendron Festival is soon to be under way and the many high school students are preparing themselves for the talent show to be held Tuesday, June 22, at Bowman High School in Bakers villc. The talent from East Yan cey was chosen last Friday. The individual winners are Wanda Hollificld and Charlie Boone. The group winners *e the Reflections, featuring Charlie Boone, Chris Miller, Debbie Thomas,Janice Hunter, Lisa Fox, Cathy Deyton ,3terTe Banks, Pat Holcombe and Glenn Williams. The auditorium will be open from IKX) to 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 22. Refresh ments will be served by the Lions Club. The talent show will begin at 8:00 p.m. The 1971 Rhododendron Queen will be chosen on Sa turday, June 26 at 3:00 p. m. All are welcome to come and join in the fun and ex citement. ★ By Janice Hunter and Cathy Deyton The graduating class and marshals of East Yancey High School had group picture made Friday, May 14. Separate pictures were made of the ho rt>T students and marshals. The marshals have been announced as follows: Cathy Deyton, Chief, John Blair, Jimmy Nor ris, Janice Hunter, Jerry Rid dle, Sharon Cassida, Clifton Webb, Janice Young, Debra Wyatt, Miranda Whitson, and Ernie Howard. Valedictorian of the Senior Class is Jeannie Biggerstaff. Salutatorian is Diana Styles. The 1971 Eastonian finally arrived two weeks ago. The theme throughout the Annual b Time, and it is dedicated to Mr. Coy F. Bailey. Most of the students liked the Annual very much. The credit goes to the staff who spent many long hours on it. The editon were Marilyn Laughrun, Jean nie Biggerstaff, and Benny Wyatt. HIRE THE VETERAN AND YOU HIRE EXPERIENCE! Cane River H.S. By Pam Fox, Kay Honeycutt and Marvin Hensley Senior group pictures were taken Friday by a photographer from Spruce Pine. The Cheerleaders and Beta Club picnic was held last Tues day night. Both clubs are spon sored by Mrs. Lucy Kates. Due to rain, the Monogram Club and Student Council pic nic which was scheduled for May 15, was postponed. The picnic will be May 19. ★ By Kay Honeycutt The Cane River HighSchod Future Homemakers of Ameri ca departed May 4, 1971 at 4:00 p.m. for Asheville. They went to Bailey's Cafe teria where they ate supper and then went shopping in the Mall. From the Mall, the girls went to the Terrace Th ea ter where they saw "Love Storyl' After the movie the FHA mem bers left for home. Future Homemakers mem bers who went on the trip were: Jane Banks, Rhonda Stiles,Sue Fox, Sandra Tucker, Gloria McCrary, Debbie Silvers, Kay Honeycutt, Broma Bradford,De bra Whitson, Rita Higgins, Pam Fox, Audrey Renfro, Kathy Hughes, Diane Banks, Marie Maney, Nina Silvers, Rosie Sil vers, Susanne Banks, Debbie Edwards, Donna Letterman,Ma rie Ledford, Linda Randolph, Karen McCurry, Mary Adkins, Debbie Anglin, Joan Deyton, Virginia Silvers,Wanda Higgins. The Cane River FHA would like to thank Mr. and Mrs. Jim Neill, Mrs. Pauline Hensley, and Mrs. Phyllis Bailey for making this trip possible. n Belinda Robinson Sets Record Miss Belinda Robinson, a sophomore at East Yancey,won Outstanding Female Track Par ticipant during the Appalachiai Conference Track Meet held May 12 at Mars Hill College. Belinda broke the conference record in the 100 dash which she ran in 12.5 seconds. She also won first place in the 60- yard dash and was instrumen - tal in helping East Yancey girt place a close second to Mars Hill. Rhonda, Belinda's sister, was only a fraction of a second behind her sister in loth events. Both girls plan to partici pate in the State Regional Meet to be held in Charlotte on May 28. Belinda and Rhonda are the daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Th omas Robinson of Route 2, Burnsville. 4-H dub News Clearmont 4-H Club met Wednesday, May 5, 1971 at the Clearmont school library. Lavenia Peterson led the 4-H Pledge, the Pledge of Al legiance and the 4-H Motto. Jill Peterson and Rmsy Whit son were in charge ofdevotiois. Mr. Patrick Guyer answered our questions about the 4- H camps, Dress Review, Fashion Show, and District Activity Day held in Hendersonville on June 17, 1971. Mr. Guyer showed slides on Entomology and slides of the Schaub 4-H Camp located near Waynes ville,N. C. He then presented the Red Ribbon to the Clearmont Tap Dancers who won second place at the 4-H Talent Show held at Clearmont School April 30. The dance team members are Kathy Bailey, Davenia Peter - son, Lisa Whitson and Pansy Whitson. The team is spon sored by Mrs. Betty Deyton. There were eleven members present at the 4-H meeting, along with Mrs. Betty Deyton and Mrs. Mary Sue Bailey,the leaders.
