drum Wilson has received word
from the State Board of Educa
tion announcing that with the
opening of school in 1972, "Ykn
cey County will have an addi
tional kindergarten project, fi
nanced entirely by State Funds.
The new project will b e
limited the first year to 46
pupils, with two teachers and
two teachers aids. At present
the county has a single kinder
garten class at each of the
elementary schools, with a
maximum of 18 pupils. This
present kindergarten program,
financed entirely with Federal
money, is restricted to child -
ren from low income families.
The new program will not be
subject to this limitation.
The schools in which the
new kindergarten classes will
be held, have not as yet been
selected.
New Principal
The Yancey County School
Board at a meeting last week
appointed Mrs. Cara Cox to
be principal of the Cane River
High School, replacing Ronald
C. Kates, who has resigned.
Mrs. Cox, who holds a
graduate certificate in counsel
ing, has taught in the Cane
River school since it opened
in 1959. Prior to that she was
in the faculty of the Bee Log
High School. She has taught
chiefly, social studies, geo
graphy and history.
Yancey Youngsters At Schaub
4-H Camp Near WaynesvHle
Thirty Yancey County boys
and girls between the ages of
9 and 14 are attending Schaub
4-H Camp this week. Camp
Schaub is located on the Moun
tain Experiment Station near
Waynesville, N.C.
During the week the boys
and girls will participate in
handicraft classes, electric
classes, wildlife and nature
study. They will also partici
pate in various recreational ac
tivities including volleyball,
softball, canoeing, archery,
swimming, hiking and horse -
manship.
Attending with the Yancey
County boys and girls will be

Miss Theresa Coletta, left for Topsail Beach this past Sunday morning, June 6th. Accom
panying these Senior Scouts and their advisor are Mrs. Fred Bacon, Mrs. Jack Biggerstaff,
and Mrs. Jimmy Biggerstaff. Besides ‘enjoying the sun’ the Senior Scouts plan to tour
the U.S.S. Battleship Memorial at Wilmington and other points of interest along the way.

The house constructed as a
vocational education teaching
project by the faculty and stu
dents of the Cane River High
School, was sold last Friday
for $22,500 after spirited bid
ding on the courthouse steps.
Dover Fouts, attorney for the
Yancey County School Board,
served as auctioneer.
The bidding opened at
$14,000 and thereafter rose

ing the disposal of school pro
perty, which require that fur
ther bids must be accepted
during a ten day period follow
ing the auction. This period
expires on June 15, and the
bid must be at least $1,175
higher than the price reached
at the auction. This mini -
mum increase in the bid must
be deposited with the clerk of

The house, recognized as
being outstanding in the quali
ty of its construction, is loca -
ted near Riverside,three miles
west of Burnsville. It was
designed and constructed under
the supervision of the two
vocational education
Jack Buckner and FlayHmsley.
The proceeds of the sale
will be used to pay off the
bank loan which financed the
construction, and the balance
will be used to get another si
milar project under way.
Festival
Plans Set
The 15th annual Mt. Mitch
ell Crafts Festival will be
held this year on the Town
Square on August 6 and 7.
Plans are now underway in pre
paration far the event which
attracts people from far and
near. The Festival will be
carried out in the tradition of
the past, but new features are
being planned for this year: a
glass blower from Tennessee
who will give demonstrations
of her craft; a hooked rug ma
ker from Piedmont North Caro
lina who will demonstrate the
making of hooked rugs; a lo -
cal craftsman from Seven Mile
Ridge who rues a free and
mallet to split oak boards; a
woodwork craftsman from Su
gar Grove who is an expert in
making gee haw whimmy did
dles, jumping jigs,and flipper
dingers. Then, there will be
the other craftsmen who have

Festival what it has been from
year to year.
Also, there will be the usu
al games, and the entertain -
ment will be provided by par
ticipants in the Yancey Youth
Jamboree scheduled at East
Yancey High School Auditor -
ium on Thursday and Friday
nights, August 5 and 6.
Once again, in the early
morning horns on Saturday,the
second day of the Festival, the
first of hundreds of chickens
will be put on the b arb eque
grill in preparation for the ap
petites of the people who at
tend the Festival.
