W yip HK FARM MANAGEMENT AWARD —Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Ray of the Cane River Commu nity of Yancey County were honored at the Annual Meeting of the Tennessee Valley Test Demonstration Farmers Association, held at Manchester, Tenn. Mr. and Mrs. Ray are shown receiving the Farm Management Award from Director Billy Joe Keefar mer during ceremonies at the awards banquet of the Association meeting.. This award is one of eight presented annually by the Association to outstanding cooperators on the Resource Management Farm Program. Painting In The Mountains "Painting in the now in its sixth year, was last week completing its first sea son in a new studio on Phillips Knob overlooking Burnsville. The studio, located one mile north of the Town Sqmre, offers a sweeping view of the Black Mountains and other higi Yancey County peaks and en compasses greatly expanded teaching facilities —a large portrait studio where classes may do landscape and still life painting. Areas in the naturally wood ed surroundings are gradually being developed where students may work from nature at close range. A living collection of mountain wild flowers is being assembled for study purposes. Nearby a mountain stream will furnish further subject matter. The instructors, EverettKi vette of New York and Burns ville and John Bryans of Arling ton, Virginia met as stueferrts of Edward S. Shorter and the late Frank Stanley Herring at the Burnsville Painting Classes; and in 1966, with a view to carry ing an the tradition of those classes, they originated "Paint ing in the Mountains", Students are offered instruc tion in landscape, still life,and portrait painting and work in oil, acrylic, water color,char ooal and pastel. Workshop in struction is also given in lino leum block and silk screen printing. Through the courtesy of the Mitchell-A very-Y anc e y library, films on art are pre sented for the students and the general public each Thursday evening at the local library, and it is hoped that a series of lectures on art history may be offered in the future as part of the class program. As a service to the commu nity, several scholarships are given each year to young peo ple from the Burnsville area who display special ability in art. This year scholarships have been awarded to Donna Beaver and Rosemary Kampf of Burnsville and to Mitzi Pres nell of Newdale. The student body as a whole is made up of amateur and semi professional artists of all ages and from a wide geograph ical area. The men and wo men in this year's classes come from Alabama, Florida, Geor gia, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Washing ton, D.C. With a future expansion of classes in view, Mr. Kivette has tentatively arranged to hold an additional two -week session this October to take advantage of the fall color.
