The 1971-72 V.LC.A.
Club held their first meeting
on Friday, September 17th.
The new officers elected are
Debbie Laughrun, president;
Ssmdy Ray, vice president;
Jeannie Miller, secretary;
Keith Hughes, treasurer and
Carolyn Miller, editor.
On their first meeting,they
discussed the responsibilities
of the officers. They also
talked about different fund
raising ideas such as bak e
sales, car-washes, etc. They
plan to have a guest speaker
at their October meeting. 21
people attended this me eting.
Vic a or Vocational-Indus
trial Clubs of America is a
state and national club. It is
a youth organization designed
for all students of trade and
industrial education. Member
ship is open to any student en
rolled in a bonafide trade and
industrial education course in
our public school. The local
chapters and the state associa
tion meet periodically to pro
vide opportunities for the mem
bers to participate in education
al, social, recreational and
vocational activities.

Art and Music is a new pro
gram at East Yancey High
School. This program is un
der the supervision of Mrs .
Kate Zuver. There are tw enty
two students headed each day
for this class. In this class
all types and phases of music
will be listened to such a s
Country, Jazz, Opera, Rock
and Religious. This is done
so the students will learn to
appreciate all music. In the
first part of this course the
class listened to songs from
North Carolina. Some people
night want to call them "hill
billy" songs. They were re
corded near the Yancey Coun
ty area and they are all songs
from North Carolina.
The oldest instrument used
in North Carolina is the dulci
mer. Others are the five
string banjo, guitar and fiddly

The class has learned to re
cognize all of these. Another
instrument that has been stu
died is the harmonica. Dale
CSborne, a student in the Art
and Music class, brought his
harmonica and played several
songs, among them were
Dixie and Games People Play,

The Art and Music class
is now studying ballads. We
have been listening to some
of the ballads Johnny Cash
sings among others. We hope
to display some of the work
in the near future. These dis
plays will consist of drawings
and ballads written by students.

Doctor Convalescing
Jack C. Homer, M. D., F.
A.C.S. , has returned to his
home in Spruce Pine from
Winston-Salem, where he un
derwent major surgery follow
ing preliminary surgery which
was performed in Japan while
Dr. and Mrs. Homer were on a
trip to the Orient.
It is reported that there was

torily. Upon advice of his
surgeons Dr. Homer will enjoy
a period of rest and recupera -
tion. Then, following a re
turn to Winston-Salem for a
routine check-up, he plans to
resume his practice in Spruce
Pine on Monday, October 4.
