Yancey Hospital And Spruce Pine Hospital
Announce Merger -To Form New Corporation
After many months of meet
ings and negotiations the Tin
cey Hoapital Board of Trustees
and Spruce Pine Community
Hospital Board of Trustees
recommended that the Yan
cey Hospital be merged with
the Spruce Pine Community
Hospital and form a new cor
poration to be known as Blue
Ridge Hospital System, tic.
At NC State
Open House
A group of East Yancey and
Cane River students attended
Open House at North Carolina
State University at Raleigh,
October 9-10.
The group left Yancey
County at 6:00 a. m. and ai
rived in Raleigh at 12 noon.
During the afternoon they
toured the campus and saw
the many science exhibits.
That night they attended a
football game between N.C.
State and Wake Forest. On
Sunday morning after a brief
tour through Raleigh, the
group started back and arrived
here after 8 p. m.

Students Travel To Raleigh On Activity Bus
"Teacher Os The Year ” Chosen
Mrs. Pauline Hensley was
chosen "Teacher of the Thar"
for Yancey County by a panel
of judges on October 4, 1971.
Mb. Hensley was bcrn in
the Jack's Creek Community
of Yancey County. After
graduating from Burnsville
High School she attended Me
redith College where she re
ceived her AB Degree.
Mrs. Hensley began her
teaching career at Bald Creek
High School and has taught
here in the county since then
except one year that she
taught in Buncombe County.

1:00 to 6:00 p.m.

pital care is toward merger
which is being encouraged by
Government Agencies and
Third Party Payors (Blue
Cross-Blue Shield and other

the two hospitals will enhanoe
utilization of the existing fa
cilities, will provide souirier
basis for expansion, will con
serve health care resources,
will avoid costly duplication,
will reduce cost of health
care and will enable jointly
to provide more comprehen

dical Care Commission and
Hospital Consultant to:
1. Replace the present
facility in Burnsville with the
construction of a new long
term facility which would
contain sufficient number of
acute care beds and minimal
emergency and out - patient
facilities to serve the imme -
diate needs of the communi
ty, and
2. Expand the Spruce
Pine Community Hos p i tal
with fifty (50) additional
acute care beds, modernize
existing beds and expand an
cillary and service depart -
ments to accommodate the
additional beds and to elimi
nate duplication in proposed
long term care facility.
The present Yancey Hos
pital in Burnsville will con
tinue to operate under their
original Board of Trustees un
til such time as the new faci
lity is completed and the
existing hospital is closed.
However, the Blue Ridge Hos
pital System, Inc. will be
furnishing some management
services.

Beat Panthers

The Harris High Blue De
vils unleashed a very power
ful offensive attack and they
defeated the Panthers by a
63-0 score Friday night.
Halfback Hollifield open
ed the scoring with a 23-yard
touchdown run. Snyder pass
ed to Miller for the second
Blue Devil score. Greene
scored the third touchdown
on a two-yard run to give
Harris a 19-0 score at half
time.
Hollifield scored again on
a 35-yard run. Terry Mc-
Mahan scored on a nine-yard
blast, and Greene tallied his
second touchdown. Ledford,
for Harris High, ended the
scoring with a 25-yard field
goal with 0.03 seconds re
maining in the game.
East Yancey will travel to
Edneyville on Friday, Qcto -
ber 15th.
