Barring unfavorable weather, 1972 shipments of North Carolina tomatoes are expected to Increase sharply over 1971 and approach the level of 1970, according to North Carolina State Univ ersity extension econo mists. Apple production should be up, and Tar Heel apples should continue to reach the market ahead of those from competing areas and demand a better price than might be expected otherwise. Im proving quality offers the best opportunity to increase income from apples. The decrease in per cap ita supplies of fresh vege tables in the U.S. during the summer months should ben efit North C arolina growers who produce for sale during this season. And for sweet potato pro ducers who enjoyed a favor able marketing year in 1971, production probably will be up nationally next season with slightly lower prices resulting. Tar Heel yams from the 1971 season that are being held in storage should bring owners a good return, since the supply in storage is lower than a year ago. NCSU Work Leads to New Hybrid A new normal cytoplasm corn will be available on a limited basis in some areas of the state next sea son as a result of the release of breeding material by North Carolina State University. The yellow hybrid, Carolina 1040, was produced from two single crosses de veloped by the NCSU Agri cultural Experiment Station and distributed to seed growers by the N. C. Foundation Seed Producers Association . “This shouldn’t be in terpreted as being a major new variety release,” said Foil McLaughlin of the N,C. Crop Improvement Associa tion. “There were only about 75 acres of seed grown last year, so seed will be available only on a limited basis in local areas.” The variety is described as a full season prolific hybrid adapted to the Piedmont and Coastal Plain. It has good grain quality with a strong stalk and medium low ear placement. Yields from official tests averaged 98 bushels in a four-year comparison at ■' four locations in the Coastal j Plain and 96 bushels in a two-year comparison at three locations in the Piedmont. The genetic material used to grow this hybrid was developed earlier at NCSU and released last year as a result of the need for normal cytoplasm corn for blight resistance.
