Receive Honor For Their 'Faith And Hard Work’
The Lawrence Grindstaff
family was selected fcr the
Yancey County Farm Family
of the Year because ttey lave
had the perseverance andsta
bility to make a success of
fanning even though it ap
peared to be an impossibility
at times.
Mr. Grindstaff received
his present Farm Ownership
loan to purchase a larger
farm in order to fully utilize
the family labor. This was
in 1958. It was developed
to carry a small cow - calf

for purchasing cattle, land
development, home equip
ment and operating expenses.
From 1959 to 1968 Mr.
Grindstaff followed this gen
eral plan of farming. During
this period he lost a total of
8 cows, 1 bull and 1 horse
due to unfortunate circum -
stances. As one can readily
see this number, plus their
potential increase, would
eliminate the profit for a
small farming operation.
At times it appeared he
could not continue. He dis
continued the Grade C milk
enterprise in 1966 because it
was not profitable. Also dur
ing these years he and his
wife had large medical bills.
He now wears a bracebacause
of his back operation.
He has always paid his
accounts current and was con
tinuoisly seeking away to
overcome his obstacles with
an optimistic attitude that
next year would be better.
In 1969 he added a new
farm enterprise which was
new to many Yancey County
farmers. This was growing
trellis tomatoes. He has
been successful in growing
tomatoes for three years. The

added income has enabled
him to pay debts, build a

will be "Aging Begins With
Birth".
Another major element
is to give a hearty invitation
to our disabled citizens to
attend and participate fully
in the festivities. Who are
the disabled? Those citizens
who are approximately 45
years or older, and have a
handicap or disability so that
they are limited in normal

They may have special skills

activities are still tentative;
however, some possibilities

The community is asked
