Briggs today an nounced as a candidate for the District Court Judgeship now held by Judge James E. Holshouser, Sr., who is re tiring at the end of the cur rent term. His candidacy is one of two judgeships of the Twenty-fourth Judicial Dis trict, which is comprised of Madison, Yancey, Mitchell, Avery and Watauga Counties. In announcing his candi - dacy, Briggs stated that, "Af ter careful and serious delib eration I have concluded tint I should seek this very im portant position. The office of District Court Judge offers not only a challenge, but a real opportunity to be of some service to the citizens of our fine mountain counties. The continued increase in crime, broken homes, dis respect for law and authority, permissiveness, and a reshap ing of moral values convinces me that an attempt must be made to restore respect for law and order." CAR CARE_ R © _> ' ' / E 0 vO R— u v SAFETY ADVICE Every time you drive in the rain, your vehicle is subject to a phenomenon called “hydro planing," especially if most of the tread is worn off your tires. What happens is that the tires, at certain speeds, usually between 50 and 60 ntph, will ride on a film of water rather than on the road surface. When this occurs, it can be dangerous because the driver has no con trol for steering or braking.
