It is a most timely and informative bit of Journalism on a subject of great importance to the peo ple of Yancey County. Too often the remarks of visitoß give true impressions of our fair but sometimes de spoiled county. Such remarks as "Isn't anyone doing any - thing about the junk along the roadsides?"--"Now that I have seen the junk cars along the mountain roads, I have second thoughts about buying property here. " —" Yin cey County—the dump-heap of Western North Carolina." Yes, I have hear d these re marls. It is sad but true that we seem unable to keep our communities clean and attrac tive to the visitor. Your printing of the pic - turns show ing the Youth Group of White Oak Creek Com mu - nity and their clean-up pro ject—LlTTEß BUGGY et a! will be a great boost to the morale of a small but dedica ted group of kids. For two summeß they have been pic king up die roadside trash in a continuing effort to im|TO\c the appearance of their com munity, all done with little recognition or reward. This summer we hope to have an organization to be known a; "'rite Litterbuggeis of White, Oak Creek. " What's a Litter bugger? One who bugs Litter bugs. Perhaps if we bug the people who do the littering, we can reduce the quantity of trash along our roadsides. Anyway, that will be the pur pose of "The Litterbuggeß": to bug the Litterbugs ! For your un know ing but most helpful promotion of oir project, we feel you are en titled to honorary member - ship in good standing. This will entitle you to partici - pate in all projects and to receive all benefits of the club when it is fully organi - zed. "The Litterbuggeß "will be selling special "Buttons" to all who profess interest and B From The Yancey Extension Homemakers oO f° oc * news cues By Mrs. Mary Gillespie T!ie Peanut is such a ver satile plant, and has contri - buted so much to Southern Agriculture that March 1-11 has been designated National Peanut Week. It would be well to also take time to review the life and work of George Washing ton Carver who developed more than three hundred pro ducts from the peanut. His life history is an inspiration to anyone. The peanut-butter sand wich though often referred to in a joking manner, is one of the most nourishing you can have—you don't even have to mix your own peanut butter and jelly anymore— it is already prepared for you in jan on your grocery shelf. Our favorite peanut butter spread is: one eight ounce jar peanut-butter (smooth or crunchy) about half a box of raisins, ground. Combine and add enough mayonnaise to make a nice spreading con sistency. MITCHELL LEDGER Bakersville, N.C.
