RALEIGH Home has
always been thought of as
a haven for quiet and
relaxation. This may no
longer be the case.
If a homemaker is in
her kitchen, with the ven
tilating fan, dishwasher,
garbage disposal or food
blender all going at one
time, she is exposed to as
much noise as if she were
in a subway station.
In fact, the constant
background noise inside the
American home has risen
by about 10 decibels in the
past 50 years,

Convenience items,
such as power lawn mow
ers, motorcycles and mu
sical or hi-fidelity systems
are other major noise
offenders.
Can you avoid noise?
Perhaps not. Cut there
are ways you can minimize
it,'
When buying household
equipment, select the most
' Silent models. Industry has
learned how to eliminate
noise from many products.
Then, since equipment
is often more noisy when
it needs repair, you will do
well to keep all household
and lawn equipment in
optimum repair.
Avoid prolonged use of
noisy equipment? And try to
use noisy equipment in
isolation or with as few
family members around as
possible.
Use materials in your
home that will help deaden
noise, such as acoustical
ceiling tiles, carpet or
other soft materials,
Keep the volume of
musical or other entertain
ment equipment at a low
level.
