Mrs.' Bell is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roy A. Dun can of Burnsville, married re cently and is living in Ashe baro. She is a 1970 graduate of Appalachian State Univer - sity; a 1965 graduate of Cane River High School. She teaches home econo - mics at Frankllnville and Ram seur Junior High Schools. County in North Carolina, was launched in July 1944 by the Moore Dry Dock Company in Oakland, California, and commissioned in October '44. During her first year cf duty, she took part in the landings at Iwo Jima and Okinawa, for which she earned the Ameri - can Area, Asiatic-Pacific and Philippine Liberation ribbons. Smartly after the war encbd, Yancey was transferred to the Atlantic Fleet and participa - ted in the fourth Byrd expedi tion to Antarctica. Between 1947 and 1957, Yancey car ried cargo across the Pacific, and served in the Korean con flict. 4-H Meetings Held^- By Peggy Ann McQuade The Bee Log 4-H meeting was held April 4th at the school library. THE YANCEY JOURNAL In December 1957, the 14, 000 ton, 15-knot Yancey was deactivated and placed , in reserve until November 1961 when die was recom - missioned as a result of the Berlin crisis. The 459-foot ship was then assigned to Norfolk, Va. for duty with the Atlantic Amphi bious Force. Yancey took ac tive part in the Cuban crisis of 1963 and in April 1965, evacuated over 1000 people from 21 nations during the Dominican Republic crisis. Among the evacuees was a lifelong resident of Yancey County, North Carolina, far which the ship was named. The name of this person is not known. The club electetrtvtre. Miss Carol APRIL 27, 1972 Between 1965 and 1971, the Yancey participated in numerous training exercises designed to increase flee t readiness. At 9 a. m. January 20,1971, the USS Yancey was decom - missioned at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, Va. After decommissioning, the ship's crew was reassigned to other ships and units and the ship was placed in the custody of the Maritime Administra - tion at the Inactive Ship Main tenance Facility in Portsmouth. Captain Harold A. Ham -j berg, a naval aviator who was graduated from the Naval Aca demy in 1945, was the last commanding officer of the United States Ship Yancey.
