Land Form Influences Design Picking Site First Landscaping Job The home building boom continues in North Carolina, and it is find ing homes being built on lots that aren’t always ideal building sites. While the lots don’t have to be ideal, their shape, location and size should be taken into consideration in planning the kind of home to be built on them. North Carolina State University housing and landscape ~ specialists suggest that the location should be the first step in planning a house, whether it be a home in the country or in the suburbs. “Homeowners some time forget landscaping in the haste of building and often regret their lack of foresight,” the specialists point out in the publication, “Land scaping Your Living Space.” (Copies are available at county exten sion offices along with another NCSU publica tion. “Selecting a Home site.) The topography, or land form, of the property will determine to a great extent the design of the house and landscape. It is wise to make certain the house fits the terrain. For example, if the lot is hilly and would require extensive grading before the “dream house” can be built, perhaps you .should consider another lot. Or, it<fcnay be better to redesign the house to fit the lot. Terracing the elope gives adequate space for the house. (B) A large two-story house Is not In scale with the small yard of the original terrace. Removing soil at rear, and filling at front, will provide a flat area of better scale. (C) Selecting a house designed to fit the general topography otten is the best solution. A minimum of grading forms a yard appropriate to the house. Among the factors you’ll want to consider are these: If you have a choice, select a building site that is on a slope or higher than the road. This assures good drainage and puts the house in a dominant spot. A yard that slopes gently away from the house usually gives the most pleasing effect. On such slopes, surface water drains away from the house. A slope of six inches per 100 feet usually is satisfactory. Veterans should re by MAY Tech. for assis e in making application for If you need to make major changes in the grade, remove about six inches of the surface and spread it evenly over the area after grading. An uneven subsoil can result in an uneven lawn. In locating the house, consider the views V° u will have from windows and doors. Locate the house to take advantage of attractive distant views, such as wood lands, lakes, mountains, rolling hills, orchards, a pasture of fine cattle or the neighbor’s flower garden. benefits, or contact their local Veterans Service Officer for as sistance. This would have seemed proper to me if you had confined your comments to the editorial page; however, your views came across so clearly that every article on the subject, instead of being presented as "news", read like the editor's personal opinion. As a former resident of Yancey County (still a voter there), graduate of Yancey County Schools, and daughter of a former Board of Education member, I would like to make the following observations: Yancey County has never been, and is not, a rich or well-to-do county. Most of the jobs in the county are de pendent on a certain amount of political patronage. It is a fact of life that we, 'heirtg human, tend to help those who have helped us. We will see if the new "non-partisan" Board rises above politics and friendships in selecting peo ple for jobs or if they too don't roll heads to fill jobs with those who have helped them into office. It is also a fact that Yancey County has never had enough money to accom plish such things as new and/or radically improved school buildings, ft will be interesting to see if the new board members pull a "rich" rabbit from a hat to create Utopia in our schools and work for the welfare of ALL the children in the county or if they merely take what money is avail able and concentrate it in the Burnsville Area, leaving the rest of the county high and dry in their schools that need improving equally as much as the Burnsville Elementary building over which thae has been such weeping andwailiig, Thank you. Sincerely, Patricia Wilson Dodson Charlestown, Ind. Dear Editor: .. C? Having just read Mrs. Qhle's description of Election Day, I must comment on the conduct of one of the election offi cials in the Burnsville Precinct. Mr. Bill Atkins was asked by my father to assist in marking his ballot. Mr. Atkins promptly marked one of the ballots incorrectly. When this was called to his attention, he pretended it was accidental ly done. However, instead of obtaining a new ballot, Mr. Atkins marked it out, and marked in the other candidate. Mr. Atkins is a varteran of many political campaigns. Needless to say, he was well aware that such a ballot mist be considered soiled and therefore not counted. When I reminded Mr. Atkins of this regulation, he con fidently assured me that, since he will be doing the count ing of the ballots, he will count it as my father intended it to be counted. This appears to me to be a prime example of the "fox being left to guard the chickens. " After conferring with many people about this incident, it was apparent that there was nothing I could do to correct the situation, or, more importantly, to prevent further occurrences. Someone suggested an act of violence against the person of Mr. Atkins, but I have no inclination toward violent solutions. I wonder if there were not many cases of Violations v\hfch went unreported merely because it was hopeless to protest against the "establishment". There appeared to be a pre ponderance of election officials who are in Mr. Atkins Par ty, although surely not Hi sympathy with his tactics. Perhaps before 1974 Mr. Atkins will voluntarily give up his participation as an election official. Sincerely, Lesley Robinson Rt. 2, Burnsville Lb ns Day A Success Members of the Burnsville Lions Club want to thank Radio Station WKYK, The Yancey Journal, merchants, business - men, and all others who helped make the "Lions Club Radio Day" a success. The C lub sold S9OO in adver tising. This amount will be applied an the budget for aid to the blind. This gave President John McLain and Project Chairman Taul Wooten an opportunity to acquaint the public with pro jects that are sponsored bythe local club. The Club and the Station have received so many favor - able reports on the Radio Day that plans are being made to make this an annual event.
