Our special appreciation to Hol combe Brothers Funeral Home for their services. -Pansy & Jerry Van Hatfield report U.S. Senator FROM 11111111111 JES6E ★★ S HELMS WASHINGTON—One afternoon last week, just after a roll-call vote in the Senate, seven Senators were together on an elevator, en route back to their offices. One promi nent Senator, who is up for reelection this year, confided to the rest of us: “Fellows, I've just voted against my con victions again—and I'm getting sick and tired of doing it." Then he went on to explain: "That bill we just voted on is rotten. But if I had voted against it, the big newspapers in my state would have crucified me. They've got the people thinking that everything these leftwingers propose up here is just wonderful—and there's just no way to get the real truth out to the people." SAME—lt's pretty much the same in every state. Almost everywhere, the big-city daily newspapers are controlled by ultra-liberal editors. As a result, these newspapers feed a steady diet of propaganda to the people. Ultra-liberal Senators are glorified, and conservative Senators are con stantly condemned, misrepresented and ridiculed. As a result, many Senators are becoming increasingly timid about voting their true convictions. As one Senator once remarked, "I am not interested in being a defeated candidate in the next election." That's why so much bad legislation is being passed by Congress these days. All of it sounds so good —the ultra liberal newspapers seldom tell you about the bad aspects —thus, the American people don't know what's being done to them until the laws go into effect. And then it's too late. FORCED BUSING —Some of us in the Senate have been trying for many months to put an end to forced busing of school children. I lost by only one vote (46-45) last year when I submitted an amendment to stop forced busing. Now, as this is written, we are trying again; but the ultra liberal political power structure has again rolled out its big guns to make certain that forced busing is continued. I wonder how many members of labor unions in North Carolina, for example, realize that their national leaders are using money, collected in dues paid by hard-working union members, to continue forced busing. Several days ago, the legislative director of the AFL-CIO, Andrew J. Biemiller, sent a letter to Senators urging us to vote against legislation which would stop forced busing. He called on Senators to "resist" the anti-busing amendment v.hen it comes to the Floor of the Senate. WONDER —I wonder, also, how many North Carolinians realize that the "no-fault" insurance legislation which recently passed the Senate will result in an estimated 25% increase in their insurance premiums. How many North Carolinians are aware of the inflation ary impact that will be the inevitable result of the mini mum wage bill recently approved by the Senate? Do working mothers know how much domestic help will cost as a result of this bill? Will they be able to afford it? Do citizens realize how many jobs will be lost—thus sending countless additional thousands of people onto the welfare rolls? Has anybody analyzed the so-called "health" legislation that various politicians are proposing? Do you really want socialized medicine —which has been a failure in every country that has tried it? These are just a few of the crucial issues which I feel many Americans simply do not under stand. INFORMATION —There's plenty of available information on such issues for citizens who care enough about getting both sides to write for it. Instead of taking the word of big-city liberal newspapers, it might be worthwhile to examine both sides on torced busing, foreign aid, social ized medicine, deficit financing—and other proposals which I strongly oppose. I'll be glad to hear from you —any time. Matches don’t start forest fires. THNK j qki A PuWc Swvtce erf This Newspspftf & Th® Advertising Council Uxncl . installing officer for the Post and District.
