Tommy Murphy were united in marriage on Sunday, May 12, 1974 at the Covey Rock Free Will Baptist Church of Greer, Mountain. Rev. Jonas Revis officiated at the double ring ceremony before an altar marked with baskets of gladiolis of rainbow colors. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bruce C. Laws of Green Mountain. The groom’s father is Mr. Edgar Murphy of Relief, N.C. and his mother was the late Mrs. Nettie Murphy. The bride was given in marriage by her father. She chose a formal gown of white taffeta with a white nylon lace overlay. The bodice featured a high neckline with long fitted sleeves of nylon lace. Her shoulder length veil of illusion was attached to a pillbox. The bride carried a bouquet of white daisies with white satin love knot streamers. Mrs. Jerry Miller of Sumter, S.C. was her sister’s matron of honor. The bridesmaids were Rita and Diane Ayers, both cousins of the bride, and Barbara Street, close friend of Souther, Arrowood Engaged Mr. and Mrs. Carrol H. Souther of Burnsville would like to announce the engagement of their daughter, Susan Elaine, to Michael Arrowood, son of Mr. and Mrs. James H. Arrowood of Burnsville. Miss Souther attended East Yancey High School and receiv ed a diploma from Mayland Technical Institute. Mr. Ar rowood attended Cane River High School and is presently employed at Micro-Switch in Mars Hill. Wedding plans are incom plete at present. the bride. The attendants wore long gowns featuring stand-up col lars with short puffed sleeves. The gowns were in colors of pink, blue, lilac, and green. Each attendant carried a single long stemmed mum the color ol her dress. Mr. Larry McKinney, ne phew of the groom, was best man. A musical program was presented by Miss Wanda Mc kinney, niece of the groom. Mrs. Larry Ayers of Erwin, Tenn. attended the guest book. The bride’s mother chose for her daughter’s wedding a light blue dress with a white lace coat. She wore a corsage of blue carnations. A reception was held on Saturday night ai the home of the bride’s parents. Mr. and Mrs. Murphy are both graduates of Cane River High School. Mr. Murphy is employed by BiLo in Burnsville. After a wedding trip to Cherokee, N.C. and Myrtle Beach, S.C.. the couple will be making their home in Green Mountain. SUSAN ELAINE SOUTHER ELIZABETH ANN ROBINSON GEORGIA JEAN PATTERSON Whitson To Wed Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Patter son of West Asheville announce the engagement of their daugh ter Georgia Jean Patterson to David William Whitson, Burns ville, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Whitson. Miss Patterson is a graduate of Asheville High and plans to attend Asheville Buncombe Tech this fall. Mr. Whitson graduates in August from Asheville Bun combe Technical Institute and has been accepted for fall term at Mars Hill College. BRENDA LEE McINTOSH Reception To Honor Bride Elect Miss Denise Piercy, bride elect of Kenneth Hughes was honored with a reception and miscellaneous shower Tuesday evening May 21, at Higgins Memorial United Methodist Church. In the receiving line were Mrs. Lucille Piercy, mother of the bride-elect and Mrs. Louise Hughes, mother of the prospec tive bridegroom. Miss Jeanne Ray greeted everyone at the register and Mrs. Edd Hensley served at the punch bowl. Hostess for the reception shower were Mrs. Joe Young, Mrs. Maude Higgins, Mrs. Vernie Wilson and Mrs. Weslie Roberts. Mrs. Ruth Sholes and Mrs. Ruby Hensley assisted with the decor. Miss Juliene Young, Miss Jan Hensley, Miss Susie Laughrun and Miss Susan Edge helped with the unwrap ping and placing of the gifts. Several out-of-town guests and local friends attended. Robinson And Jones Engaged Mr. and Mrs. Worley Ro binson of Green Mountain an nounce the engagement of their daughter Elizabeth Ann to Bernie Allen Jones, son of Mr. and Mrs. Matthew Jones of Green Mountain. Elizabeth Ann is a graduate of East Yancey High School and is employed by Mohasco, Inc. Bernie Allen is a graduate of Cane River High School and is employed by Glen Raven Mills. A June 30 wedding is planned. News Report From Fairview Mr. and Mrs. Bob Osborne of Illinois have been visiting Mr.and Mrs. Curtis Hastings. ** Born to Mr. and Mrs. Ed Ballew a son in Marion General Hospital on May 21. ** Rev. Randy Autrey and wife, Dorothy, of Nebo, N.C. were visiting Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Autrey last Saturday. ** Mrs. Dora Huskins who has been staying with her son Bill of Dysartsville, N.C. because of her poor health, has come back \ to her home on the Seven Mile Ridge. ** Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Wil liams of Germany were visiting with their Aunt Ellen Williams, on the Seven Mile Ridge this past week. ** Mrs. Cathleen McGee was visiting her parents over the weekend, Mr. and Mrs. Law rence Cook. ** Mr. and Mrs. Dock Geouge visited Mr. and Mrs. Sam Carroll of Valdese, N.C. last Saturday. ** Mclntosh, Pearce Engaged Brenda Lee Mclntosh, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Hubert Mclntosh of Carolina Beach, will be married June 14 to Dr. James R. Pearce, son of Mr. and Mrs. Allen H. Pearce of Martin, Tennessee. Brenda is the granddaughter of Mrs. J. C. Mclntosh and the late Mr. Mclntosh, and the late Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Evans, all of Burnsville. Miss Mclntosh graduated from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington in 1971 with a B.A. degree in Elemen tary Education. She is presently employed at Animal Hospital in Wilmington. Dr. Pearce graduated with a B.S. degree in the College of Agriculture at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville in 1968. He received a D.V.M. degree in 1972 at Auburn University where he was a member of Phi Zeta National Veterinary Honor Society and Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society. Dr. Pearce was previously employed at Animal Hospital in Wilming ton. He is presently in private practice in Memphis, Tenn. Deans List Students Excellence in their spring semester academic work at North Carolina State University has earned Dean’s List honors for 3,311 students. Among these, outstanding students are three from Yancey County. John C. Renfro, a mathe matics major, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Renfro of Bald Creek; Forrest R. Westall, student of civil engineering, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. P. Westall of Route 5 Burnsville; and John R. Blair, student of civil engineering, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Blair of Route 1, Green Mountain, all earned the honor of being included in the Dean’s List at N.C. State. , . jf * Jflßr If M - I £ ,LETCH.rw ,o,i Reeeives Furman Award Linda Deyton Denney of Pickens, right, holds the Furman Scholarship Cup for highest academic average which she received during commencement ceremonies at Furman University Friday. She maintained a 4.0 average of a possible 4.0 during her academic career and is a music mqjor. Linda is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. 0. W. Deyton of Burnsville. General Excellence awards went to Christine Warren of Colorado Springs, a psychology and to Donald Wayne Janney of La Grange, Ga., a political science m^jor. Garden Club Aids Project V. yrhe Garden Club of Burns ville met in the home of Mrs. Troy Ray, Thursday afternoon, May 23. After the minutes of the last meeting were read, the treasurer reported that $192.61 were in the treasury. A report on the members of the club who were ill was made, and it was suggested that the corresponding secretary send cards to them. A letter from the head of “Music in the Mountains" was read calling attention to the need of meeting the cost of the Steinway piano which that or ganization has recently pur chased. It was moved and seconded that the club send $25.00 toward the project. It was announced that the first concert of the present season would be on the first Tuesday in June. Due to the illness of the I MRS. JERRY DEAN LAWS Silvers And Laws Are United In Marriage The wedding of Rose Ella Silvers and Jerry Dean Laws took place at 8:00 p.m. May 24th in a candlelight service at the Higgins Freewill Baptist Church. Rev. Harold Bennett Jr. conducted the ceremony. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Reece Silvers. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jay H. Laws. Given in marriage by her father. The bride wore an antique satin gown with re embroidered lace and attached train. Her chapel length mantilla was of English netting and a short blusher was edged in lace and attached to a lace camelot cap accented with seed pearls. She carried a bouquet of yellow roses and daisies. Mrs. Kathy Lynn Briggs, sister of the groom was matron of honor, wearing a long empire gown of white satin with a chairman of the committee on the restoration of the street signs, there was no report forthcoming. It is to be hoped that progress can be made soon to remedy the situation. Due to the absence of the expected program, Mrs. Joan Reeve gave a very vivid de scription of her journey from Japan to England some years ago. What impressed Mrs. Reeve as she crossed Russia on the Siberian railway was the lack of happy faces on the people she saw everywhere. And the service which a gift of an American dollar brought the traveler. Lack of food on the long trip along with comfortable sleeping quarters were a part of the experiences. All in all. the contrast betwen present day travel in the countries and the printed green chiffon overlay. Miss Kathy Wheeler, cousin of the bride, was bridesmaid. She was dressed in a long empire gown of white satin with a printed yellow shiffoy overlay. Both attendants carried bou quets of yellow, green and white daisies and wore headpieces of daisies. Alan Silvers, brother of the bride, was best man. Usher was Tommy, cousin of the bride. Junior attendants were Ter esa Hall, cousin of the bride and Michael Buchanan, cousin of the groom. The bride’s mother wore a purple suit with white acces sories. The groom’s mother wore a pink dress with white accessories. A reception was held at the bride’s parents’ home. The couple will live at Route 2, Burnsville. past difficulties was quite evi dent. The club welcomed as a new member Mrs. Mary King, after which refreshments and a social hour followed.
