Gladys Colette I The Runner By Malcolm Boyd. 1973. Pp. 162. Doubleday & Co., Inc., Garden City, N.Y. “I can remember when I ran inside a maze, in crooked lines and obsessed by fear”. So states the sinful runner (man), who refused to have for his partner Jesus, the Master Runner, in the race of life. Such is the thesis for Malcolm Boyd’s Boone Gets Scholarship Joel Stegall, chairman of the Music Department at Mars Hill College, has announced the recipients of the Music Scholar ships given annually at the Baptist-related school. The list included Charlie Boone of Burnsville. These awards, made on a competitive basis, go to those who exhibit superior musical ability, good scholar ship and Christian character, among other things. j * HH ■ 4pif . Homemakers’ Booth A Favorite One of the very favorite booths each year at the Crafts Fair is the one prepared by the Yancey County Extension Homemakers, directed by Mrs. Mary Margaret Deyton. This booth is always well stocked with homecrafts of every description, done in a professional and exacting manner. 1 tblsp. Worcestershire sauce 1 tsp. salt 1/8 tsp. pepper Prepare chops as for pan fried pork chops, brown only. Drain off fat. Combine sauce ingredients and pour over meat. Simmer, covered, for 45 min utes. NOTE: In place of fried pork, use 3 cups cooked pork shoulder chunks, if desired. VARIATION: Chicken or turkey in barbecue sauce...ln place of pork shoulder, use fried chicken or 3 cups cooked turkey chunks or slices. Peach Bavarian Pie 1 pkg. (3 oz) Orange Gelatin Va cup sugar Dash of salt 1 cup boiling water l A cup cold water 2 tblsp. lemon juice 1 envelope Whipped Topping book, The Runner, in which he removes the abstract connota tion surrounding the very name of the Christ, and reveals Him as real, on a person-to-person basis. There ensues a series of dialogues between Jesus and modern-day characters con cerning how they relate God to their own lives on their own terms. The rock singer tells his side of the story, along with other students who express their views on prayer, sexual morality, marijuana, war, race relations, poverty, etc. Jesus is never too busy to listen to both sides of their problems, and agrees with them on many points. However, like a magnet, he pulls them back to God and the truths which are basic. The beauty of The Runner lies in its fresh, direct approach. There are no pat, stereotyped answers The Gospel becomes alive, using modern termino logy. The abstract Jesus disap pears, and in his place appears The Runner, our partner in the race of life.
