S Homemakers Install Officers More than 100 homemakers registered for the annual meeting of the Yancey County Extension Homemakers Association on Tuesday, October 15, at the First Baptist Church, Burnsville. The Theme “A World of Opportunities With Extension Homemakers’' was carried out In the educational exhibits showing achievements in clothing construction, creative crafts, foods and nutrition and home furnishings. During the meeting, at which Mrs. G.H.Durham of Mitchell County was guest speaker, Presidents from Homemaker Clubs gave reports of projects completed during the year. Special Recognition Certificates were presented to the BurnsvlUe EH Club, Brush Creek EH Club, Happy Homemakers Club and Open Gate EH Club for outstanding achievement. New officers for 1975-76 were installed in an impressive ceremony conducted by Mrs. J. C. Hollifield, President of the Western District Association of Extension Homemakers. BURNSVILLEfIYX. 28714 Speaker At GOP Dinner: Holshouser To Visit Governor Jim Holshouser will come to Yancey County on Friday, October 25, to give a boost to local Republican candidates in the November 5 general elections. The Governor will be the featured speaker at a 6:00 p.m. dinner at East Yancey High School honoring the GOP ticket. Tickets for the affair are $5 each. “These candidates have been friends of mine for a long time,” the Governor said. “1 am especially in terested in doing whatever I can to help Dean Chrisawn win a seat in the State House of Representatives. Dean is the kind of dynamic leader we need in the legislature to continue our efforts to bring better programs and services to the people of North Carolina.’’ Chrisawn, a Burnsville merchant, has worked closely with the Governor on numer ous occasion over the past several years. He was an active worker in several campaigns while Holshouser was a State Republican Chairman, and he was an important member of the Holshouser for Governor campaign organization in the 1972 general election. Holshouser said he was looking forward to seeing our many friends in Yancey County.” Governor Holshouser was first elected to the State House of Representatives in 1962, winning in his bid for elected office by the largest margin of any legislator in Watauga County history. He later won three more terms in the House. He was elected GOP Chairman in 1966 and was re-elected in 1968 and again in 1970. In 1972, he became the first Republican in this century to win the governor ship of North Carolina. Since becoming Governor, he has earned many regional and national honors. He has twice been elected to the Lions Club Governor To Visit Lion Shaw Brown of Mooresville, District Gover nor, will be visiting the Burnsville Lions Club. Lion Brown, married to the former Ruth Litaker, has served faithfully in Lionism. He has 100% attendance for the past 26 years and has won numerous Lion awards for serving his fellow man. He is also listed in the 1974 edition of Personalities of the South. The Burnsville Lions have extended to him a warm welcome. The Burnsville Lions Club has made tremendous strides in the past year. Some recent services include the securing of fifty eye will donations, with Lion John McLain in charge. The Lions voted to give the Yancey School Band SIOO now and SIOO per year to be put in the budget for them. They voted to pay registration for those patients at Sun Valley Rest Home at $2.00 per person to Mayland Tech, to teach a course in Bible. The Burnsville Lions had a Halloween Candy Sale, with brooms andbulbs, on October 8, which/was Lions World Service Day. The Club gave the Mental Hgalth Associa tion sls for part of the fuhds to hold a picnic at Mountain Wilderness for those from Yancey County that are in Broughton Hospital. The Club paid $lO to the N.C. State Zoo in Asheboro towards the purchase of a family of live lions. The United Fund for Yancey County was given a check for SSO and other amounts were given as follows: White Cane S3OO, Boys Home $75, Camp Dogwood SIOO, CARE $25, Blind Banquet S2OO, Blind Van $250, and Health De partment SSO. The Lions wish to thank the people of Yancey County for buying blind-made pro ducts and helping in the various projects. These efforts made it possible to serve where needed and especially provide services to the blind and visually handicapped. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 24 1974 Executive Committee of the National Governors’ Con let - ence-a rarity for a first-term governor-and also has been named chairman of the Southern Regional Education Board, co-chairman of the Coastal Plains Regional Com mission and campaign chair man for the Republican Governors Association. As Governor, he has been a leader in pioneering new programs to solve the prob lem of inadequate health care in rural areas, including the development of a system of rural health clinics that is the first of its kind in the nation. At his urging, the General Assembly adopted the most progressive program for pub lic education in the State’s history, endorsed major ef forts to improve the State’s mental health program, and authorized appropriations for expansion of the State park system that exceeded all total Shaw Brown Eubanks Places 2nd In Region FFAMeet The forty seventh annual convention of the Future Farmers of America was held in Kansas City, Missouri on October 15-18 with 17,000 members in attendance. National FFA President, Mark Mayfield, opened the session by introducing Presi dent Gerald R. Ford who spoke on energy conservation. Other notable persons to appear in the convention were Secretary of Agriculture Earl Butz, William F. Pierce of the U.S. Office of Education and other national agriculture and business leaders. Tony Eubanks, represent ing the states of North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia won second place in the Southern Regional Public Speaking Contest. Son of Mr. Sales Tax Collections The report of local 1% Sales and Use Tax collections by County for September, 1974 was issued recently by J. Howard Coble, Secretary, North Carolina Department of Revenue. The report shows Yancey County collected the amount of $16,739.42 for the month of September. This compares with the amounts of $24 thousand and $25 thousand collected by Mitchell and Avery Counties respectively, and exceeds the $13,510.73 collected for that month by Madison County. previous expenditures for parks. Holshouser also brought about the first real statewide plan for building roads in North Carolina. Eleven days after taking office, he signed an executive order creating the Governor’s Efficiency Study Commission. This stu dy was undertaken entirely with funds and manpower donated by private industry. So far, its recommendations have brought savings of more than s3l million, and other recommendations now in the process of being implemented will bring another S3B million in savings. Governor Holshouser has taken government to the people as never before thru his “People’s Days,” “Peo ple’s Tours” and Ombuds man’s Office—all designed to heip citizens get answers and solutions to their problems involving State government. Yancey Young Democrats Attend YDC Convention North Carolina’s Young Democrats held its annual Convention this past weekend in Raleigh. Eight delegates, under the leadership of Mrs. Willoree Jobe, represented the Yancey County club. The delegates attended meetings on improvements of the YDC Constitution, resolu tions to be considered by the next General Assembly for the betterment of North Carolina, and the elections of the State YDC Officers. Addressing the convention were such honored guests as and Mrs. Ronald Eubanks of Pensacola, Tony is a senior at East Yancey High School and part-time announcer at Radio Station WKYK. He is presi dent of the local FFA Chapter and also of District VIII. Also attending were Her bert Allen, Vo-Ag teacher at East Yancey and family, and the Eubanks family including grandparents from Little Rock in Arkansas. NC Senate Candidate Visits Here The lovely autumn weath er brought out the candidates this past week. Mrs. Sonya Friedrich, candidate for the North Carolna Senate for the 26th District, visited in Yancey County on Friday. She was accompanied by Mrs. Barbara Keleher, wife of Asheville physician, Michael Keleher. The ladies were joined for lunch by Solicitor Clyde Roberts, Yancey Sheriff Ker mit Banks, and Clerk of Court, Arnold Higgins, at the Ambeijack Restaurant. Mrs. Friedrich is the wife of Jim Friedrich, Sales Mgr. for Mars Manufacturing in West Asheville. Governor, and James Ramsey, Speaker of the House. Also present were Rufus Edminson, candidate for Attorney General and Robert Morgan, candidate for the U.S. Senate. Mr. Morgan pointed out that while inflation was bad, unemployment was rapidly becoming the major problem in North Carolina under the present administration. He stated that approximately 10,000 textile workers had been laid off in the past two months in the Tarheel State alone. It was decided by the delegalior. that 1974 must be the year of the Democrats. This was the first time Yancey County has been represented at the Young Democrats Club Convention. Out of sixty counties, Yancey County had the 2nd largest delegation at the banquet and had the largest delegation from the 11th District.
