Hundreds Os Tons Os Coal Scattered
Train Derails Near Toecane
A Clinchfield Railroad train derailed in two places near Toecane last Friday, December 13,
resulting in heavy damage to the three engines and most of the cars. A Clinchfield spokesman
said that no one was injured in the wreck which left at least 25 cars off the tracks and spilled
hundreds of tons of coal along the track and the dirt road alongside it. The train was traveling
south when the main part of the wreck occurred, about one-half mile south of Toecane, along the
North Toe River. The three engines and at least 10 cars were derailed at this point. Twelve cars
wore off the track north of Toecane where the railroad crosses the river and the bridge appeared to
have sustained extensive damage.
Chrismon Tree Display Set At
Bald Creek Church Open House
There’s a special kind of
tree for Christinas that’s
becoming well known the
country over. Adorned with
symbolic decorations that
originated centuries ago, the
Chrismon tree is rapidly
making its place in the annual
celebration of Christmas.
This year the Bald Creek
United Methodist Church has
decorated a tree with lavish
gold and white pearl Chris
mons that have taken the
ladies church many
hours*to make.
Chrisnions are not to be
used on a tree with other
Christmas decorations, such
as tinsel and flashy orna
ments. The Chrismon tree is
strictly a religious, symbolic
tree. The non-denominational
Chrismons which were started
in the Lutheran Church of the
Ascension in Danville, Vir
BURNSVILLE, N.C. 28714
ginia. are copies of symbols
that early Christians used to
identify each other; some are
new explanations of God and
His work.
The public is invited (to
attend an open house at tpe
Bald Creek Church where tjie
Chrismon tree may be sefen
between the hours of 6:00 add
8:00 on Thursday evening,
December Id.
Children
Need
V accine
A study by the North
Carolina Medical Society has
shown that 62% of children
two years of age or younger
have not been fully immu
nized against diphtheria, te
tanus, whooping cough, polio
myelitis and measles. This is
a shocking and dangerous
situation and is likely to have
disasterous results if the
situation is not corrected.
The local health depart
ment and the physicians of
our county wish to do
everything possible to correct
this situation according to
Dr. Melvin Webb, prominent
Yancey physician. “We are
extremely fortunate in having
a first rate health department
and the services of two
pediatricians, Dr. Carolyn
Cort, M.D. and Dr. Fergus
Pope, M.D.” he said.
Information regarding the
schedules for immunization
can be obtained from the local
health department or if the
parents desire, their private
physicians.
Dr. Webb stated that of
equal importance is the fact
that once immunization of a
child has been completed, it is
imperative that booster doses
of vaccine be given for some
diseases for the remainder of
the person’s life. Tetanus and
polio are two examples of
advisable lifetime immuniza
tion procedures.
“I will not attempt to
outline the proper immuniza
tion schedule for children and
the subsequent booster sche
dule for children and adults,”
said Dr. Webb, "but I will
again emphasize the fact that
we need desperately to reach
everyone possible so that
proper immunization can be
carried out in Yancey County.
