Math Contest - Thursday, April 24, 1975, thirteen contestants from East Yancey High School journey ed to the Western Carolina University campus for the annual High School Mathe matics Contest. Entering in the Comprehensive Math Division were James McAu liffe and Tim Thompson. Algebra II: Mitzie Lawhern Becky Welbom and Todd Bailey. Geometry: Sheila Pe terson, Sandra Fender, Marc Vess and Donny Laws. And in Algebra I: Harriet Vess, Janice Biggerstaff, A1 Mura tori and Randy Ollis. Mr. B.R. Bailey served as sponsor. After the test, the group ate lunch, toured the campus, and returned home. Grants Awarded To Seniors Several seniors at East Yancey High School have been awarded scholarships Q for their college educations beginning this fail. These students are Joey Biggerstaff, Jeff Bailey, Tim Thompson, Kenny Shade, Randy Robin son, Charles Dulaney and Donna Young. Donna Young was awar ded a Basic Grant, Northwes tern Bank Scholarship, North Carolina Grant, and SEOG. She will be attending Lee’s Mcßae College. Joey Biggerstaff has been awarded a Superior Student Scholarship and Jeff Bailey, a Veteran’s Scholarship. Both Joey and Jeff plan to attend Appalachian State University this fall. Tim Thompson and Kenny Shade have both been awar ded a Basic Grant for their college education at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. Randy Robinson has been awarded a Basic Grant and a President’s Scholarship at Mars Hill College. Charles Dulaney was awarded a Trustee Scholar ship and also the Chamber of Commerce Scholarship for Mars Hill College. Congratulations to these students and the best of luck to them for a successful future at college. Receives Award Joel Eric Biggerstaff, Jr. of Burnsville has been named to receive one of 20 Superior Student Awards for incoming freshmen at Appalachian State University; The cash scholarship awards go to incoming freshmen who gra duate in the top ten percent of their graduating class and make 1,200 or above on college entrance examina tions. Biggerstaff, a senior at East Yancey High School, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joel Eric Biggerstaff of Burnsville. Projects include the collection of gifts and items for patletats at Western Carolina Center and assisting library personnel in the South Toe Library. The Junior Beta Club was visited Monday, May 5, by officers of the Beta Club of East Yancey. Joey Biggerstaff, former Western District Beta Club President, and outgoing officers, Debbie Miller, Renee Buchanan, and Emily Husklns, wrte assisted by the 1975-76 officers of East Yancey’s Beta Club, Ronnie Gregory, President; Linda Harding, Vice-Presi dent; Cindy Wilson, Secretary; Billie Marie Gilley, Treasurer. Food Program The Yancey County Health Department has been selected to participate in a Supple mental Food Program for Women, Infants, and Child ren, better known as the WIC Program. The Health Depart ment urges all area grocers to participate in this federally funded program. The WIC Program pro vides all grocers an oppor tunity to supply selected nutritionally desirable foods for pregnant or nursing mothers, and their infants or children up to age four. The food purchase order will be issued to eligible participants at the Local County Health Department. The participant will pick lip the foods specified and give the pur chase order to the cashier of the participating grocery. The shelf prices and sales tax are recorded on the purchase order. Participating grocers are then reimbursed through Region D Council of Govern ments. If you are interested in participating in the WIC Program call the Yancey County Health Department for more information at 682-6118. This leadership-service organization at South Toe has as its objectives to encourage effort, promote character, stimulate achievement among members, and to encourage students to continue their education after high school graduation.
