Talent Abounds At Jamboree To many people in Yancey County, around the first of August has come to mean time for another Jamboree. Again, another Jamboree is to be staged in the traditional manner of a mountain folk festival, and the time this year is July 31st and August Ist, beginning each evening at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium of East Yancey High School. The young people who take part in the event this year will bring the total number of perform ers in the eight-year-old program close to one thou sand. On Thursday evening when the curtains open, there will be music, singing, and dancing in a lively manner that will cause clapping and foot-tapping in the audience as the music sounds, the voices sing, and the dancers move in a rhythm that often defies description. The program this year will be made up of three different classes. Class I will be Grades K-6, Class II will be made up of Grades 7-12, and Class 111 will include adults. Entries will be in the following categories: Folk Song/Folk Ballad, Religious, Patriotic, Instrumental, Smooth Square Dancing, Folk Dancing, and Buck Dancing. The two craftsmen are from over the mountain in Baraardsville and will be returning to the Mt. Mitchell Fair on August 1 and 2 again this year. Grand Champion Trophies will be awarded, and trophies will be given to winners in each category of each class. Also, the Hughes Trophy, given by Mr. and Mrs. Farrell Hughes, Burnsville, will be given, one to the individual who scores the highest number of points for the most authentic folk song/folk bal lad, and the other one to the group that has the highest number of points for the most authentic song in the same category. As has always been the custom, judging will be done by judges who live outside Yancey County. Among the performers this year will be dance teams from the Mt. Mitchell Swing ers, a local group of smooth square dancers who graced the Jamboree with their talents last year. As in most any program, other highlights are being planned, but with the Jamboree directors, each performance is something of a highlight and is special because of the time involved and the effort made to present a talent which represents the T- .person himself. As has been said in past years regarding the Jam boree, “Come on out, pat your foot, and clap your hands as once again the lively and entertaining people and ‘young adulis’ dance and sing down the moon”. Special highlights of the 1974 Jamboree included the appearance of Tina Banks, 1974 Junior Rhododendron Queen. Also, there were two dance teams, one in clogging and the other in folk, from Mitchell County. On Thurs day evening, the Parkway Playhouse had a special part in the program. Another attraction was the Tom Koch Family with a Balalaiki Ensemble. When the trophies were awarded on Friday night, Grand Champion Win ners in Class I were James and Leigh Ann Robinson, Micaville Elementary School.
