HOLIDAY ENTERTAINING WITH APPLIANCES Don’t overlook the freezer as one of your best resources when entertaining-many dishes can be made ahead and frozen. Fondue pots are naturals for buffets, open houses, or other types of informal entertaining. An electric frypan can save trips to the kitchen in keeping hot appetizers hot. The slow cookers that are so popular now can be used to keep cider or holiday punches piping hot for hours for only pennies. The large size electric coffee makers can also be used for hot fruit juices-place the whole spices in the basket for added perked-through flavor. An electric warming tray is much more energy efficient than a burner or oven for keeping coffee and home made pastries hot for a drop-in brunch. When planning for enter taining with appliances, you should sketch out a brief timetable and check extension cords well in advance. For safety, don’t run cords across lanes of traffic or overload circuits. When small children are expected to attend, be particularly careful about the placement of appliances and cords. Don’t let the possibility of accidents dim the festive holiday mood. Why not use your common electric fry pan in a not-so common way! Trees: A Growing Business Now that the holiday season is here, everyone is searching for a tree to highlight the spirit of Christmas. According to Ray Dorsett, Soil Conservationist, Christmas tree production is a growing business in North Carolina with a multimillion dollar retail value in sales. Yancey County is experiencing value from Its sales and there is still available acreages for more trees. Some of our steep and eroding hillsides which are presently in pasture, crops, or lying idle, would be better suited and more economically feasible if planted in trees, said Dorsett. Whether you have only a couple of acres, or over a hundred, maybe you should consider planting trees for added income and stabilization of gullying fields. Recommended planting dates for Fraser Fir and White Pine are not until March or April, but now is the time to begin planning where to put your trees and what necessary land preparation would be necessary. The Soil Conservation Service, located in the County Courthouse, will be glad to discuss with you the location for planting, tree species, and assistance in ordering your seedlings; and will set up an appointment to visit your land and assist in the planning if you call or come by the office. Not only is this a means of increasing your future income, but you would also be preventing soil loss and adding the beauty of evergreens to your land. Pictured above is an eroding pasture needing stabilization. Pictured below is a steep hillside, covered with trees and thereby stabilized.
