If not, or if you’re not sure, the Center for Disease Control of the Department of Health, Edu cation and Welfare urges you to check with your doctor or health department and have the child fully protected. problem is that now such diseases can be preven ted, people are no longer afraid of them and become lax about having their children vaccinated. As a result, many children remain needlessly vulnerable to serious disease, and deaths and serious disability still occur from these preventable diseases. In fact, there are so many unvaccinated children I that we once again face the threat of local epidemics. What diseases should children be vaccinated against? The Center for Disease Control lists seven polio, measles, mumps, ru bella, diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis (whooping cough). Safe, effective vaccines are available for all these di seases. As a rule, the sooner a child can be vaccinated, the better. Some of the vaccines, such as polio, should be started when the infant is oniy about two months old. Others, such as measles, should not be given during the first year of life, but should be given as soon after the child’s first birthday as possible. The reason for early vaccination is that children are in many cases very susceptible to the diseases when they are young and become more severely ill if they get the disease. If an epidemic strikes it is likely to hit hardest and spread most quickly among young child ren* Parents who put off vaccination until the child is ready for school are making a serious mistake and gambling needlessly with their child ren’s lives. Schools are prime places for the spread of disease and unprotected school-age children should definitely be considered can didates for vaccination. Unvaccinated children, and children whose parents are not sure about the vaccination period, should be taken to their physician or health department without delay. Chain Letters With Bicentennial Twist Fraudulent chain letters have been around for many years, but odds are better now that you may receive one, this time with a Bicentennial theme, according to Burns ville Postmaster Phillip Banks. “A scheme, which in volves the mailing of U.S. Savings Bonds, has shown up in major urban centers of Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Maryland, Virginia and Flor ida” Banks said. “The letter with the , Bicentennial gimmick,' 1 the postmaster explained, “urges those receiving it to mail 52.00-SI.OO for each 100 years—to the person whose name is first on the list in celebration of our .nation’s 200th birthday.” "Chief Postal Inspector C. Neil Benson has informed us that actual profits from chain letters are usually obtained only by those who originate or enter the scheme very early,” Postmaster Banks said. Chain letters requesting money or other items of value are non-mailable under the Federal Mail Fraud Statute. They are considered to be fraudulent because of the likelihood that the chain will be broken and most partici pants will get nothing from Firemen t To Give Free TV A portable TV will be given free by the Bakersville Volunteer Fire Department to the person holding the lucky ticket to the Texas Wrestling Matches, purchased at the door of the Bowman High Gym on Saturday, April 10, at 8:00 p.m. Texas Wrestling is sponsored by the Bakersville VFD and consists of a six-man tag team match-one hour limit. Teams featured are Little Joe, Indian Harry and Coun try Boy Enos vs. The Wild I Man, Ken Dakota and Sam Sloan. The Texas Tornado Death Match—No ,holds bar red, winner takes entire purse-features Rex Darnell and Chief Warcloud vs. Cowboy John Preston and his Hired Guns. A Rugged 4-man tag match-one hour limit, features Buddy Russell and Ronnie Freeman vs. The Black Owl and George Hytt. The free portable TV offer is void to all Bakersville firemen and families and to till wrestlers and same. All others who buy a ticket at Texas Wrestling this coming Saturday are eligible. Come and have some fun. their involvement. Typically, the chain letter requires each of its recipients to sell or mail copies/ to a specified number of others, who would also be asked to continue the chain of mail ings. Usually, the chain expands so rapidly that the number of prospects is soon exhausted. For example, a chain letter requiring each purchaser to send copies to six others would theoretically reach thf entire literate population of th6 earth by the time it reached its 12th link. The fact that chain letters are not mailed does noi exclude the scheme from' being a violation of law if the scheme involves the mailing of bonds or other valuable items. On the other hand, so 4 called chain letters which calf for nothing more than recipes,* picture post cards and the like, are ordinarily considered to be mailable because th® items sent do not constitute 4 “thing of value” under j applicable law. However* postal cards involving “good luck” chain prayers thatl contain a threat of bad luck m those who break the chain arel prohibited because it is? [Cont’d on page 3]
