On the preceding day, sonnets were recited in memory of him. The celebration was ended with goodies, party hate, and Yancey Students Enter Mathematics Contest T r.i. Ten Cane River High School students will be among the contestants at Western Carolina University’s, sixth annual High School Mathe matics Contest, to be held April 29 in Hoey Auditorium ft WCU. Contestants from fast Yancey High School will number fourteen. A total of 557 students from 42 WNC high schools Will compete for top honors in four contest divisions-alge bra I, geometry, algebra 11, and comprehensive. The five highest-scoring contestants in efch division will be awarded certificates of merit, and plaques will be presented to sie three senior high schools fnd one junior high school fihose students earn the highest average scores. Four pieces were prepared, two of which the members chose to play—“ Washington Post” by John Phillip Sousa, and “Fantasy On Chester” by William Billings. The judges picked one piece- “Kaleido scope” by John O’Reilly. According to the director, Mrs. Lisa Mauney, the band turned over an outstanding performance-So keep on playin’!!! Justice. ** HERITAGE BASEBALL By Dennis Higgins Mountain Heritage has had a tough season so far this year. The final score for the Sylva-Webster game was 12-0. The game was played at Sylva. West Henderson game ended at 10-0. That game was played ft West H. The score was 194) for the Henderson ville game at Hendersonville. East Henderson score was 11-5 and that game was played at home. Reading Aid Citizens United for the Improvement of Reading will hold a regional meeting April 28 at the Western Regional Education Center in Canton. The 9:00 a.m. meeting is open to the public. Attending will be county task force mem bers, reading specialists, edu cators, and interested citi zens. Presentations about local efforts and activities to improve reading will be made by county task force heads. Mark W. Bennett of Burns ville is the task force head for Yancey County.
