Bears, by and large, are hostile toward all cubs except for their own. But Mildred has recently accepted and adopted the new cob of Honey, a four-year-old bear born to Mildred in 1972. i In late January, Honey gave birth to a lone female cub in Grandfather Mountain’s environmental habitat for bears. The cub was safe at the time, because she and her mother were the only bears in the environmental habitat, although at least four adult bears usually reside there. A comported effort was made to separate Honey from her cub so (JriM it could be moved to safety before the large bears were returned to the I BTIH« MWWO» MM|« ntim J tWB 4M 59 20 8 A | Reg. «1“ nasalftinus Tsyrup i con g ßs^n without Reg. It appeared then that the cub would have to be bottle fed and raised by people, since Honey was impossible to handle while the cub was under her care. At this point a suggestion was made to see what gentle Mildred’s reaction would be if her granddaughter were placed with her and her newest twin boy cubs, which were born six days after their niece. The experiment worked, as Mildred and her cubs liked the third cub, and it liked them. So it is now a happy life for the little orphan, living with her grandmother and her two young uncles. TO THE EDITOR Dear Editor: During the wr ek of April 26 to May 1, 1976, a group of very conscientious and environmental minded young people from Yancey County took the time and effort to clean up twelve campsites along the shores of Lake James. We do not know the names of these young people, but we do know that they are students of the Arthur School in Burnsville. They undertook the task of helping our association clean up around the lake. Unfortunately, there are those who use the lake for boating, fishing and camping and do not clean up their litter when they depart. These young people under the leadership of John V. Morgan did an outstanding Job of picking up one hundred bags of litter and trash during their camping visit. We would like to take this opportunity to thank and praise this group publicly as they certainly deserve it. It Is heartening to observe our younger generation taking a positive approach in the preservation of our environment. What an uplift from the many acts of violence, drugs and crime! Yours truly, George Verbruggen. President Lake James Environmental Ass’n. 200 Parents Attend S.
