Heritage School, then had their picture taken at the town square. They ate at the Bantam Chef and went to Riverside Skating Rink. The plane had been missing since Friday, May 14, on a flight from Wadsworth, Ohio to Gainesville, Florida. The dead men were identified as pilot Hugh Gahan and passenger, Dr. J.J. Bartolomeo, both of Ohio. The week-long search involved more than 300 CAP members and 55 aircraft. Then the Wreckage was spotted, members of the Yancey County Rescue Squad, Yancey Sheriff Kermit Banks and Deputies, and a member of the CAP hiked in to the area which was a 3‘/j hour walk from the nearest road and at approximately 6,000 feet elevation, to assist in removing the bodies. A helicopter team from Ft. Bragg was on the scene to help in this endeavor. The bodies were taken to Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home after next-of-kin was notified. Maxwell Gets New Manager # Charles H. Stiles of Burnsville last week became the new manager of Maxwell Home Furnishings, Banks Family Square, Burnsville. Charles, a native and lifelong resident of Yancey County, came to Maxwells from a previous position at Pearlmans, Inc. in Asheville. He has been associated with the furniture business for the past ten years. “I’m glad to be working in Yancey County,” he stated, & Charles Stiles "and I look forward to helping my friends from my own and neighboring counties find whatever they need in the furniture line.” He also extended an invitation to everyone to "Drop in and see me when you’re in town.” Mr. Stiles 1 School Policy Set The Board of Education i adopted a policy, whereby, all students in grades K-5 will be required to attend school in the district in which they reside. Good Luck GRADUATES District Lines Set Ily School Board The Vancey County Board of Education has established district lines between the Cane River and East Yancey Middle Schools, effective at the beginning of the 1976-77 school year. Walter Edwards Is directing the construction of the two buildings. The buildings are being financed through a grant from the Tennessee Valley Authority and a supplemental grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development. The primary use of the centers in the daytime will be continuation of the Child Development Program. The Bald Creek Child Development Program has been operating since October IS, 1971. Lena Fagen has been the director of the program since that time. The staff of Bald Creek include Janet Waytt, teacher; Susan Ball, Faye Proffitt, Judy Swann, Nan Proffitt, Mae Anglin, Madge Alien and Patricia Payne. All Burnsville students living east of these points will go to East Yancey. Also assigned to the Cane Piver Middle School will be st i dents from the Bald Creek, Bee Log and Clear mont school districts, as now established. The program is run by the Department of Social Services directed by Ruby Smith. Nancy Wyatt is the director of the Burnsville Child Development Center and assisting her are Joanne Jones, Alma Thomas, and Margaret Shade. The Bald Creek Center is located across from the Bald Creek Methodist Church in Bald Creek and the Burnsville Center is located on the old Oak Crest School site.
