'|HH ~WHB Donny Laws To Attend Governors School Donny Laws, who is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Laws, and also a rising senior at Mountain Heritage High will leave July 5 to attend the N.C. Governor's School this summer. Donny was selected last April by a state level Selection Committee upon recommen dation of the Yancey County schools. The Governor’s School, founded in 1963 by a grant from the Carnegie Corpora tion is a study of the liberal arts. In order to attend the , N.C. Governor’s School a , student must be in the top 5% ! of his class and must do 1 superior work in all his ' classes. He must also be active in various school activities. Some of Donny’s activities while in school have been: Math Club, Beta Club, Pep Club, Bus Driver, Liter ary Magazine, Annual Staff, PTSA, Monogram Club and Basketball. He is also a member of the Society of Distinguished American High School Students and Who’s Who Among American High School Students. Donny was selected to attend the school in Social Science. The school is located in Winston Salem and Donny will return on August 14. r» Course In Sewing Set Mayland Technical Insti ‘ tute will offer a course in Sewing beginning on Thurs day, July 1, at 6:30 p.m. in Cane River High School. The class is for both beginning and advanced students. A person may start and com plete any kind of sewing project in the class. There will be a $5.00 registration fee for the course. Technical Institute announces that Creed Edwards of Burns ville has been placed on the Dean’s List for the spring quarter, 1976. Creed >is a • student in welding. Harley Peterson and family and Mr. and Mrs, Dean Mahala and family of Oxford, Pa. will be visiting Mr. and Mrs. Fred Peterson of Green Mountain and other friends and rela tives this week. * Born to Mr. and Mrs. Ricky King a son, Jason Lee, 7 lbs and 1 oz, on the second day of June, 1976 at Spruce Pine Community Hospital. He will be 4 weeks old on Wednesday, June 30. * Miss Hope Buck has had the following guests: Col. and Mrs. Melwyn Sloane of Albuquerque, N.Mexico, Mr. and Mrs. Michael Pegg of Cheshire, England and Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Pegg of Birmingham, England. c- Open Gate Club Holds Meeting The Open Gate Home makers held their monthly meeting Tuesday, June 15 at the South Toe Community Building. Barbara Grenell from Pen land School showed slides and gave a very interesting program on the art of dyeing yarn. Delicious refreshments were served by the hostess, Mrs. Thelma Loftis. Members present were Mesdames Florence Woody, Lucille Shuford, Adaline Briggs, Thelma Loftis, Ger trude Ramsay, Lois Loftis, Joyce Clifton and Judy Loftis. Visitors were Mrs. Mary Ruth Marzelta and Misses Penny and Amanda Loftis. 8 <»• § I V \ 1 r i ■ jL j June Birthdays Celebrated These members of the Nutrition Program celebrated their birthdays June 24, with friends of the program site. The program has hot meals Monday through Friday, 11:30 at the Community Building. It offers quilting, craft instructor two days a week, nutritional education, friendly atmosphere and a delicious hot meal for citizens over 60. Anyone interested please call 682-7563. 3farrfccllj||p NELLE P. BROCCOLI Mrs. Nelle Peterson Broc coli departed this life on June 12, 1976. She was the daughter of the late John K. and Ida Renfro Peterson of Green Mountain. Nelle was born and lived in Yancey County till her marriage to Charlie Broccoli of Provi dence, Rhode Island. Surviving in addition to the husband are two daugh ters, Joanne Broccoli and Dianne Almonte; one son, Charlie Arthur Broccoli; two grandchildren, Richard and Stevie Almonte, all of Cran ston, Rhode Island. Also surviving are three sisters, Lydia Duncan, Carrie Renfro and Annie Evans; three brothers, Ike Peterson, Joe Peterson all of Green Moun tain and Arthur Peterson of Hickory. Due to the fact that not all the family were able to attend the funeral service in Rhode Island, a memorial service will be held on Sunday, July 4th, at South Bend Free Will Baptist Church, at 11 o’clock a.m. The Rev. Francis Rad ford will officiate.
