Landlords Having trouble paying rent? Having trouble finding renters? A new program offered by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) may be able to help both tenants and landlords in Yancey County. The standards include indoor bathroom facilities, hot and cold water, being fully wired, and the unit being in good repair. In order to participate in the program, landlords must be willing to bring the housing unit-house, mobile home, or apartment-up to standard condition and agree to lease for a minimum of one year. In return the landlord receives a guaranteed portion of the rent the remainder being the responsibility of the tenant. If the tenant vacates the unit before the expiration of the lease, the landlord will receive 80% of the guaran teed portion for sixty days or until the unit is occupied, whichever comes first. Yancey has been allotted funds to assist forty families for the year. Eleven families in the county are already on the program and receiving the monthly supplement. Cynthia Whitson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sherwood Whitson, has registered as a contestant representing North Carolina and Mountain Heritage High School Cynthia will be a Majorette at Mountain Heritage this fall. Young of * Newdale died Monday, July a 26, in a Johnson City, a Tennessee hospital after a c long illness. He was a lifelong resident of Yancey County, the son of the late Thomas and Harriett Gibbs Young, a j retired farmer and a World ( War I veteran. , Surviving are the wife, Nora Robinson Young; two ( daughters, Mrs. Marjorie Fox and Mrs. Betty Towe of Newdale and a son, Ray ( Young of . Johnson City, Tenn., and 4 grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday in the Newdale Presbyterian Shore in conjunction with WAMY Community Action and Region D Council of Governments. RASSIE WOODY Rassie Woody, 72, of Route 2, Valdese, died Sun day in a Valdese hospital after a period of declining health. A native of Yancey Coun ty, he* was the son of the late Jason and Martha Hughes Woody. He was a retired employe of the Crestline Furniture Co. of Valdese. Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Ocie Randolph Woody; two sons, Sydney Woody of Greensboro and Shelton Woody of Valdese; two daughters, Mrs. William Rec tor of Drexel and Mrs. Wayne Eppley of Gastonia; two brothers, Russell Woody of Bakersville, Robert Woody of Henderson; five sisters, Mrs. Virgie Gouge of Hickory, Mrs. Pearl Thomas of Newdale, Mrs. Ed Thomas of Burns ville, Mrs. Stella Briggs of Gary, Indiana, and Mrs. Roy Lyles o. u Mountain; and 10 grandcnildren. Services were held at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 3, at Pleasant View Baptist Church of Morgnnton, of which he was a member. EUGENE EDWARD HARRIS Eugene Edward Harris of Hermosa Beach, California died in a Long Beach, California hospital Wednes day morning, July 21, after a long illness. A native of Yancey County, son of the late Alexander and Ann Tipton Harris, he had been living in California for the past sixteen years and was a World War II veteran. He is survived by two daughters, Mona Lee Harris of Hermosa Beach, California, and Karen Baldino of Phila delphia, Pa.; a brother, Luke Harris of Hermosa Beach, California; two sisters, Mrs. Mildred Mayes of Dallas, Texas and Mrs. Leon Ostrod ka of St. Louis, Mo. Services were held Satur day, July 24 at White and Day Funeral Home, Redondo Beach, California. MRS. VEREL BODFORD Mrs. Verel Bodford, 61, of Bill Allen Branch, Route 2,, eßurnsville, died Saturday, July 31-, in a Western North Carolina hospital after a long illness. She was a native of Mitchell County, the daughter of the late Landon and Effie Buchanan Howell. Surviving are the hus band, Ray Bodford; two step-daughters, Mrs. Frank Hughes of Baltimore, Md. and Mrs. Harold Schneider of Falls Church, Va.; two step sons, Donald and Gail Bod ford of Burnsville; two sisters, Mrs. Otis Buchanan and Mrs. John Burleson of Bakersville; two brothers, Jessie Howell of Bakersville and Claude How ell of Biltmore, N.C.; nine grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Monday in the* Windom United Methodist Church of which she was a member. Revs. Don Turman and J.R. Dawkins officiated and burial was in the Pete Young Cemetery. MRS. RALEIGH CHRISAWN Mrs. Maggie Chrisawn, 79, of the South Toe River Community died Tuesday, July 27, in a Spruce Pine hospital after a short illness. She was a native and lifelong resident of Yancey County and the daughter of Bill and Elizabeth Westall Simmons. NANCY DENISE THOMAS . Nancy Denise Thomas, 3 year old daughter of Steve and Lola Fox Thomas died Monday night, July 26, in an Asheville hospital after a long illness. Surviving in addition to the parents are one sister, Karen Thomas of the home, and the grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Bradley Thomas of Green Mountain and Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Fox of Burnsville. Funeral services were held at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday in the Green Mountain Free Will Baptist Church. Rev. Charlie Miller officiated and burial was in the McCracken Ceme tery.
