Jim Hunt will top off his Democratic guberna torial campaign at a Western North Carolina rally in Ashe 'viile Friday, August 13. '• The campaign finale will . be held at Asheville High School at 6 p.m. Hunt said that Western North Carolina was the area that kicked off his guberna torial campaign in February and he was looking forward to being here for the rally Friday. “You better believe that this won’t be the last time you see Jim Hunt in Western North Carolina,” Hunt said, adding that he plans many ■ more visits to the area before the November election, “and plenty .of times while I’m governor.” •• The public is invited to 'attend the rally and meet Hunt. Jehovah’s Witnesses Protest Atrocities t- a* A world wide protest against the atrocities commit ted against Jehovah’s Wit nesses in the East African country of Malawi has been registered by the World Council of Churches, mem bers of the United States Congress, various parlia ments and other public officials. - 1 John Ironside, the local spokesman for Jehovah’s Witnesses is a minister associated with the Burnsville congregation. He said, “The persecution of Jehovah’s Wit nesses in the Republic of Malawi is undoubtedly the worst case of religious op pression by a national govern ment since Hitler’s Ger many.” Ironside reported that for the past several years this horrible treatment has been permitted, even encouraged by members of the govern ment, and committed by the youthful “Pioneer League” of the Malawi Congress Party, the only political party in the country. The reason given is that Jehovah’s Witnesses refuse to buy a political party card and join the party. Mr. Ironside added that many attempts have been made by the Watchtower Society in New York, world wide headquarters for the religious organization, to meet with the Malawian officials and explain their stand, but all efforts have been met with silence. And throughout this year, 1976, there have been hundreds of thousands of letters, tele grams, and other communica tions from concerned citizens around the world sent directly toDr. H. Kamuzu Banda, Life President of Malawi, asking j him to use his influence to ( bring this senseless religious persecution to a stop. Yet, the murders, rapes, beatings and other oppression continue. Apparently even the deep concern voiced by the many religious and government leaders around the world have been to no avail. <" Ironside said that there is a simple solution to the problem. If a card were prepared that is simply an identification document, then the witnesses would gladly purchase it, for already, in other countries they carry such a card in obedience toE the law of their own countries. I But. to join a political party II atid purchase a card identify-II ins oneself with such a party I * would violate the Christianl conscience of these people.! He added, "The more than! 20,000 Jehovah’s Witnesses! in Malawi can indeed be a I powerful force for good and I peace to the country if they! ate permitted to carry on I unmolested in their Christianl worship.” I Ironside said that the! 2,500,000 Witnesses around I the world deeply appreciate! the prayers offered on behalf! oFtheir fellow Christians ini Malawi and for the many I letters and telegrams ofl protest sent by the different I Officials and private citizens! everywhere. | ~ MACH TO SMOPL .., CM |Q I DRuMStia£.fa79 i lllTy sMHMK TOlPy I fllM ■1“ | (fuckSteftlC. #acon™, *l3? ; TENDER £|nQt£fiMBOMtUESS iSWfcKr’W 69+ sa)ps[m<l^srEWßEffl* 9 g ifiusfl&e *794 fGRWiOBttt W; i BALLPARK .flu. meftT t|r>o SE6-PAK...3/<4oz.3ARS Lfoa A A rt AAAA rt A A rt AArtA AA rt VtCTI i-RANk-S •*' • *|- . ! w»mp *rSf •^^W^^A/Wwwanm^i " 54.
