It was felt that , students could be better trained if allowed opportuni ties for applying skills de veloped through classroom instruction. The most practi cal means of achieving this goal was in the actual construction of homes by the students. AMY Construction will build a house each year in the Tri-County area, thus afford ing Mayland Tech students the means by which they can apply skills such as blueprint reading, mechanical drawing, construction planning, ma sonry, carpentry, and electri cal installation, to name a few. Also, the pride of having been an active participant in such an accomplishment helps in more firmly estab lishing confidence in each student’s ability. House construction began in October, 1975, when Northwestern Bank of Bakers ville approved a construction loan. Six-tenths acres of land. • was purchased on Carter’s Ridge Road in the Red Oak Hills Development of Spruce Pine at which time building suppliers in the Tri-County area were given the opportu ! nity to bid on the material needed for construction. Six suppliers submitted low bids and were awarded contracts. Since construction began, more than 95 students have been assigned to the con struction site at various stages for specific learning experi ences, each receiving approx imately 20 hours of actual on-the-site instruction and training per week. Light Construction students enroll ed in the day curriculunr performed the exterior anc interior construction and in stalled all plumbing. Addi tionally, they did all finishing work and landscaping. Th< night curriculum student! performed all cabinet making and design. All electrica wiring was installed bj students enrolled in th< electrical/electronics installa tion program. The house bi-level it style with and fron decks. Th< house is fully carpeted witl carpet furnished by Tin Carpet Corner on Bakersvilk Road and installed by Dick’: Carpet Service.
