Wiseman, the noted compo
ser and musicians from Avery
County, gave several num
bers very appealing to the
large group assembled in the
Bruce Tomberlin Auditorium.
Rufus Edmisten, the
young, dynamic and very
popular Attorney General,
emphasized the highlights of
the current campaign by
stating the Democratic Party
has united from the top to the
bottom. From Jimmy Carter
and Jim Hunt at the top of the
ticket to the last Democrat on
the ballot, Democrats are
working for the election of a
responsive people’s govern
ment that can end the drift
and weak leadership we have
had for the past eight years.
Glenn A. Morris, Repre
sentative for Yancey and
McDowell Counties, fro;.i
Marion, spoke briefly. He
urged all citizens to go to the
polls and vote on November 2.
If we are to continue our
democracy as we know it,
more people must go out and
vote and get involved in
politics and our American way
of life.
According to a statement
made earlier by Lt. Governor
Hunt, the party’s nominee for
Governor, the campaign
‘‘marks the beginning of a
new spirit in the Democratic
Party of North Carolina. It's a
winning spirit; it’s a united
spirit and it’s more. It’s a
spirit of determination to
its heritage agfepßF
party of the people of North
Carolina.”
Dr. Fergus Pope and his
wife Ruth from Celo gave
some very important factual
information about our Demo
cratic candidate for President,
Jimmy Carter. According to
the Popes, Governor Carter is
a very brilliant, deeply reli
gious, dedicated person. He
has the leadership qualities
that our nation is begging for.
He is one of those rare people
our nation produces when we
are at a low ebb, who can and
will carry our nation forward
to the heights that we aspire.
Local Democratic candi
dates attending and speaking
briefly were Carl A. CArter of
Burnsville, candidate for the
Chairmanship of the Board of
County Commissioners; Gay
Miller, candidate for member
of the Board of County
Commissioners, of Ramsey
town; Alton W. Robinson,
Newdale, for member of the
Board of County Commissio
ners; and Grace Ayers,
candidate for Register of
Deeds, of Burnsville.
This delightful supper and
fellowship meeting success
fully climaxed a highly suc
cessful series of supper
meetings held throughout
Yancey County. In May the
gatherings began at Oear
mont hosted by the Jacks
Creek and Green Mountain
precincts; followed by Bald
Creek in June, sponsored by
