Red Cross Thanks Donors , Workers The Mayland Chapter of the American Red Cross wishes to thank all those donating blood at their recent Bloodmobile visit to Burns ville. Ninety-two persons pre sented themselves to donate; of these, 15 were rejected, 16 were first time donors. The Red Cross, Mayland Chapter, also wishes to thank South Toe Fire Calls April 4, Monday at 4:30 p.m. heater fire at residence of Elma Harrison in Celo. Oil heater flooded and caught fire. No fire damage. Smoke ejector used to clear house of smoke and odors. Two trucks and 12 firefighters responded. April 8, Friday at 9:30 p.m. Grass fire near Busick. Called in by passing motorist with CB. Frank Bow ditch had fire under control and nearly out when the F.D,. arrived. One truck and 11 firefighters responded. The South Toe Volunteer Fire Department recently held an election to fill vacancies in the business offices. Frances Murphy was elected Presi dent and Gavriel Goldstein wak-elected Secretary, both by unanimous acclaim. For mer president Jim Burch has moved to Avery County and earlier no one had wanted the job of secretary, so the position was vacant. Burnsville Fire Calls Tuesday, April 5 at 2 p.m. Automobile on fire at Mt. Mitchell Industries. Fire star ted from wiring, destroying vehicle. Three trucks, 8 men responding. Wednesday, April 6 at 9t15 a.m. Richard Hall resi dence on Plum Branch Road, defective flue setting wall and ceiling in kitchen, bathroom and bedroom on fire. Moder ate damage to house. Two trucks and 10 men respond ing. USAF News The son of a Burnsville couple has achieved the rank of airman first class in the U.S. Air Force. Airman Gerald D. Styles, whose parents are Mr. and Mrs. Phillip D. Styles of Burnsville, is an air passenger specialist at Charleston AFB, S;C., and serves with a unit of the Military Airlift Command. The Mayland Chapter sincerely appreciates the tre mendous amount of work they have done and are continuing to do. Free blood pressures were taken for anyone who presented themselves at the bloodmobile. Teachers Society i Banquet Friday, April 1, the members of the Alpha Rho Chapter to the Delta Kappa Gamma Society attended a banquet at Beam’s Restaur ant in Spruce Pine. Those from Yancey County who attended included Cara Cox, Nelle Bailey, Iva Nell Buck ner, Louise Hughes, Doris Tomberlin, Lillian Tomberlin, Una Maney, Eloise Mclntosh, Hazel Dellinger, and Sara Hensley. The banquet program was presented by Mrs. Winnie Killian, Director of Region 9 and Dr. Verna Berg am an, instructor at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. Dr. Bergaman, speaker, gave a slide presentation on out standing women educators which included Mrs. Ruby S. Gouge, a member of the Alpha Rho Chapter. The Ruby Gouge Recruit ment Grant was awarded to Linda McGimpsey, a student at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Linda is from Marion, North Caro lina.
