PAGE 10 THE YANCEY JOURNAL MAY 19, 1977 ■ ■“r IVAN WHITSON Kan Whitson, 57, of Green Mountain Route 2, died in an Asheville hospital Monday morning, May 16, 1977. He was a native of Yancey County, a World War II disabled veteran, and a farmer. Surviving are the wife, Betty Peterson Whitson; four daughters, Misses Pansy Hope and Sally Ann Whitson of the home, Mrs. Mike Whitson of Burnsville and Mrs. Walter Hoyle Jr. of Spruce Pine; one son, Ivan Blaine Whitson of Green Mountain, N.C.; the father, f Ike Whitson of Green Moun tain; three sisters, Mrs. Mary Lee Beam of Green Mountain, Mrs. Lucille King of Burns ville and Mrs. Alice Ruth of Costa Rica; two brothers, Billy Whitson of Lincolnton, N.C. and Roy Whitson of * Wilmington, N.C.; and two grandchildren, Ivan Andrew Hoyle and Alicia Jane Whit son. Funeral Services were held at 2 p.m. in the North Bend Free Will Baptist Church of which he was a member and trustee. Revs. Cecil J. Higgins, Carmichael Price, Frank Murphy, Ronnie Peterson and Jack McKinney officiated and burial was in the Peterson Cemetery. HERBERT M. GARLAND Herbert M. Garland, 85, of Burnsville died Thursday morning, May 12, in Yancey Hospital following a long illness. He was retired from the Ginchfield Railroad after 41 years of service, and had lived in Burnsville for the past 15 years. Surviving are two daugh ters, Mrs. Addie Jane Taylor of Johnson City, Tenn. and Mrs. Virgie Hughes of Green Mountain, N.C.; five sons, Walter Garland of Johnson City, Frank Garland of Erwin, Tenn., Lester Garland of Burnsville, Rev. Ray Garland of Kingsport, Tenn., and Velma* Garland of Darling ton, Missouri; twenty four grandchildren and twenty one great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 14, in the chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Rev. Howard Whitson officiated and burial was in the Roselawn Gardens Cemetery in Johnson City. ROSS WEEKS Ross Weeks, 50, of the Phipps Creek Community died in Yancey Hospital Friday morning, May 13, after a two-year illness. He was a native of Lynchburg, Va. and for the past 9 years had been residing in Yancey County and was a Music Instructor. Surviving the wife, Jane Ball Weeks; a step-son, Arnold Ball of Burnsville; the mother, Mrs. Daisy Weeks of Lynchburg, Va.; two sisters, •> Mrs. Carl Glass of Lynchburg and Mrs. Robert Marcoruios of District Heights, Md.; two brothers, Harrison and Wes ley Weeks of Lynchburg. Funeral services were held Sunday, May 15, at 2:30 p.m, in the chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Rev. Donald Penland officiated and burial was in the Ball Cemetery. KATE PHILLIPS Mrs. Kate Phillips, 79, of Sand Hill Rd., Asheville died Tuesday night, May 10, at the home of a daughter, Mrs. ./Jimmy Banks with whom she had made her home for the past 10 years. She was a native of Yancey County and the widow of the late Elmer Phillips who died in 1967. Surviving in addition to Mrs. Banks is another daugh ter, Mrs. Arthur Edwards of Burnsville; five sons, Locke Phillips of Greenville, S.C., Foch Phillips of Roosevelt Lake, Arizona, Guy, Buck and Jap Phillips of Burnsville; 13 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren also survive. Funeral services were held Friday at 2 p.m. in the Bee Log Baptist Church of which she was a member and former teacher of the ladies Bible Gass. Sharon McCurry, 17-year old daughter of Herman and Bonnie Laws McCurry died in a motorcycle accident in Stewartstown, Pennsylvania on Tuesday afternoon, May 10.
