They make new friends; encounter new ideas, and take | the first steps out of baby hood. What children learn in those first few years stays with them for the rest of their lives. For the millions of America’s children who have a speech or hearing problem, school will be a challenge they cannot meet alone. When detected early, these prob lems can often be overcome. Without treatment though, Playschool Program Slated; Registration Begins For 77-78 Burnsville Playschool will close for the summer with a program to be held in the Fellowship Hall of First Baptist Church on Friday night, May 27, at 7:30 Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Children participating in the program are Kent Anglin, Donald Banks, Daniel Boone, There are more than 40 known species of wild grapes and half of them grow in America. School-wide speech, hearing and language services offered by a qualified speech pathologist are ne cessary if these children are to have a full and appropriate education. P' This spring a speech and language conservation pro gram was completed in the Yancey County Schools. The speech pathology section of Crippled Children's Services at Appalachian State Univer Reed Brown, Bryan Cooper, Christopher Evans, Van Hensley, Jodi Hicks, Christo pher Honeycutt, Brian Jones, Benjie Riddle, Stephen Sparks and Christal Styles. Burnsville Playschool is in session 3 hours daily, 5 days a week, September through May for children three and four years of age and offers a sity agrees to screen kinder garten, first and third grades for speech and language problems. A child identified in a screening program does not automatically begin work ing with a speech therapist. That he is identified in the screening does mean that he needs to be observed more carefully to determine if he needs the assistance of a speech therapist. If it is found that the child does need supplemental work with his speech and language, then he varied program of fun and learning activities. Each Tuesday the children enjoy attending “Story Hour” at the Yancey County Public Library with the children’s librarian, Miss Theresa Colet ta. This week, some of the activities planned are making butter and a visit from Dr. Jeanette Maddox and her dogs. Parents interested in re gistering their children for the fall session may do so by calling Mrs. Jess Styles at 682-2524.
