• ' . . Soil . Judging Finalists Praised The Soil Judging Team from Mountain Heritage High School attended the national contest held in Oklahoma City. They first had to achieve as one of the top four finalists in the State Contest which they did, as well as win their district contest. Soil judging is an educa tional tool used by the high school for learning about and evaluating the physical pro perties of soil. With study and field experience, these physi cal characteristics can be accurately evaluated and lo gical decisions made about the best use and management of soils. These uses can be both agricultural and urban. During a contest, each team member must individu ally judge an open pit of soil. He determines its texture, consistency, and subjective ness to erosion. Within a staked area surrounding the pit, he must judge (without use of any instruments) the slope, drainage class, surface runoff and flood hazard. After determining these character istics, he selects recom mended land treatments for both agricultural and urban uses. With such a thorough exam, the Yancey Soil and YVater Conservation District feels these boys have done a commendable job and are proud of the success this team has achieved. The team not only performed well in the state contest, but they ranked 13th out of 85 teams entering the national contest, and were first runner-up of the South Eastern Division. Herb Allen and team members David Gibbs, Fran kie Gouge, Wade Biddix ard Scotty Hicks enjoyed their trip and gained considerable knowledge at the same time. They would also like to thank the following businesses and individuals for contributing to the cost of their trip: Burnsville Furniture and Hardware, Burnsville Men’s Club, Carters Auto Parts, Deyton Farm Supply, Hazen Ledford, Mack Ray Realty, Northwestern Bank, Yancey Builders, Yancey Soil and Water Conservation District and Yancey Veterans Coop.
