The winter damage esti mates include damage to all systems (secondary, primary, and urban), while the alloca tion of funds shown is for damage to county secondary roads only. NCDOT officials attribute the large variance from county to county to varying subsoil and water table conditions and the relative condition of the roads prior to the winter season. The North Carolina Board of Transportation has already allocated nearly S2O million to repair the damage caused by the most severe North Caro lina winter ever recorded by the National Weather Service. These funds were derived from number, of sources, including $6.1 million from the “Reserve for Emergen cies” and previously allocated primary and secondary main tenance contingency funds, as well as some $5 million that would have normally been spent for construction projects on the State’s Urban and Primary highway systems. Efforts to obtain federal emergency relief funds and a supplemental budget request to the State of North Carolina General Assembly for 30.1 million to repair the extraor dinary winter damages were not successful. The State Legislature, however, did provide “that in the event of an unreserved Highway Fund credit balance accruing within the fiscal year ending June 30, 1977, the entire amount shall be allocated to Secon dary Roads maintenance.” Funds from this source applied to the winter damage repair monies amounted to $2,8 million. Hazen Ledford. Executive Vice President Ttie Northwestern Bank. Burnsville ' / Mount Mitchell Golf % 1 / jf . BY BERTIE VAN DELL Our golf season ended with everyone happy! The banquet at The Chalet could not have been more perfect. The ladies, their husbands, our single gals and fellows and friends filled the banquet room. The ladies all looked like movie stars, instead of golfers-they sure put that gleam back in many male eyes! And, let’s give credit to the men too, they all looked so chic—so proud of everyone. A delicious dinner was served. And I do mean delicious! Almost forgot what a good prime rib tasted like. It was the best we have eaten since moving back south. It was so tender, cooked to perfection to suit everyone’s taste. Just super. After dinner William Deck introducted our champion’s father, Jim Dawson. He read Gospel Concert Mt. Celo Presbyterian Church is sponsoring one of America’s finest Gospel Con cert Groups...“ Eternity.” Eternity is far more than an ordinary musical group..it presents the gospel in a new and inspiring manner-with vocal and instrumental num bers, message and testimony. Eternity will appear at the South Toe Elementary School on Highway 80 at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 31. They will present a program that is always honoring to the Lord and one you will long remember. the beautifully written thank you and farewell letter, and proudly accepted Karen’s trophies with the feelings of a proud father. How thrilled Katen would have been if she could have heard her many friends applaud. It was well deserved. Then William Deck intro duced the Sec. and Treas. Bertie Van Dell. From a scrapbook she has worked on since the beginning of the season, she read a poem called “What is a Volunteer”- her thoughts of the impor tance of a volunteer to any club- Then surprised William Deck with poetry written by her about that “Special Pro”. Everyone enjoyed the poetry but the real enjoyment was the surprised look on Wil liam’s face! The poem was written and framed and presented to William Deck. Then Mr. Lee King of Mount Mitchell Lands and chairman Doris Edge were presented the scrap book for the club and all future ladies leagues. A gift from all the ladies was presented to our pro, William Deck. The trophies were then awarded. Mr. Jim Dawson accepted two more trophies for his daughter Karen: “The Most Improved Golfer” and the Low Handicap Trophies. My what proud parents. That next phone bill to Florida will be a biggy. Hope they told Karen how proud we all are of her. Runner up Champion Tro phy went to our gal, Rose JMarie Altemus who also won the Low Gross Trophy just that morning. What a year for Rose Marie. Betty Lou Young was presented with the Low Net Trophy which she also'won last thursday in the last Tournament of the season. Congratulations to all you lucky gals. Now give us gals a chance next year. Recognition went to Nelle Hoover and Jean Ellis for all the help they gave throughout the season. Then a gold and marble engraved medallion was pre sented to our chairman Doris Edge and to our Sec. Treas Bertie Van Dell. The banquet to all of us was a great - success...and enjoyed by a11... but mostly our Pro who is probably still washing lipstick off. And as I wrote on the last page of the scrapbook-thanks to the dear people of The Yancey Journal and the McDowell News. This scrapbook, like sum mer, is coming to the end. But with each season it really never ends.
