United Way Fund: Many Agencies Benefit Your Yancey County Uni ted Way contribution is helping to support the North Carolina United Way. You may wonder why citizens of Yancey should give $1,568 to support the state United Fund. By contributing this share, our county benefits from important organizations which it would be impossible Blood Donors 'Give 70 Pints It was a fairly slow day at the bloodmobile last Friday, October 7, when it visited in Burnsville at the First Baptist Church. The quota was 100 pints of blood; only 70 pints were collected. Twelve per sons who volunteered had to be rejected for various rea sons of the 82 who offered to donate. Fifteen persons came ih solely for the blood pressure check. Although 12 persons who volunteered at this visit of the bloodmobile were Ist time donors, Yancey County boasts three people who are near or over the eight gallon mark. In addition to O.W. Deyton who *as mentioned in last week’s bloodmobile article, Harold Anglin is also well over the eight gallon level of blood donations. Arnold Higgins is another person very close to receiving his eight gallon pin. The Red Cross and other workers with the bloodmobile prew would like to thank Everyone who gave blood at this visit of the unit to Burnsville. New HUD o ?>'■ m Hu wrogram May Help V The program offered by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (H.U.D.) may be able to help both tenants and landlords in Yancey County. The Section 8 (Existing Housing) Assistance Payments Program offers a monthly rent supplement check payable directly to the landlord if the renting family qualifies, according to family size and the annual income Ind if the housing unit meets Standards set by H.U.D. The Standards include indoor bath room facilities, hot and cold water, being completely wired and the unit being in good general repair. In order to participate in file program landlords must agree to lease for a minimum of one year and must be willing to bring the unit, bouse, mobile home or apartment up to standard condition. In return the land lprd receives a guaranteed portion of the rent, the remainder being the respon sibility of the tenant. If the tenant vacates the unit without notice before expira tion of the lease, the landlord qan receive 80% of the guaranteed portion of the rent for sixty days or until the unit is rerented which ever comes first. Yancey County has 43 families receiving the assis tance of this program at the present time with 27 more quit slots for the next twelve iponths projected. The pro gram is administered by W.A.M.Y. Community Ac tion, Inc. and Region D. Council of Governments. ■ To find out if you qualify • to receive rental assistance or tp find out if your rental unit qualifies or just to learn more about the Section 8 Assistance Payment Program contact Mrs. Fender at the W.A.M.Y. The Epilepsy Association of North Carolina is a good example. Epilepsy is not a disease; it amounts to an electrical short-circuit in the brain which produces seizures. Au tomobile accidents are a major cause of epilepsy. About V* of all epileptic seizures happen to young people under the age of 21. One child in 50 has epilepsy. Without the Epilepsy Asso ciation of North Carolina to turn to, epileptics and their families in Yancey County would not receive the benefits of advanced research and educational work.
