Have A Safe Holiday
Your beautifully deco
rated holiday home can turn
into a blazing deathtrap
more reminiscent of
“Dante’s Inferno” than “The
Night Before Christmas.”
It happens every year in
homes just like yours. The
tragedy is that it doesn’t
have to happen at all.
By using a little common
sense and following some
simple tips, Aetna Life &
Casualty, one of the nation’s
largest home insurers, be
haves you can avoid holiday
season fires this year.
to offering
traditional safety reminders,
Aetna experts point out
that wood burning stoves
are being used in more and
more homes now and de
serve some special attention
this holiday season.

While the stoves are pleas
ant to use and can provide
an important secondary
heat source, they should be
installed and operated
according to local building
codes and the manufac
turer’s directions.
It’s also very important,
the experts agree, to keep
all decorations, wrapping
paper and other combusti
ble materials away from the
stove at all times. Wrapping
paper should not be burned
in stoves or fireplaces. It
should be discarded in a
metal trash can or garbage
bag and immediately taken
outdoors for collection.
Here are iome easy-to
follow tips relating to
Christmas decorations:
’■—if you plan to use a real
Christmas tree, select a
freshly cut one and keep it
properly watered. Keep the
tree outdoors until you’re
ready to decorate, t
—After taking the tree
home, cut off the end of the_
trunk diagonally at least an
inch above the original cut.
Make sure the tree is placed
in a sturdy container and
check the water level
frequently.
