Stewart County Extension Chairman Winners in the youth tree planting contest, sponsored by Cherokee County Agricultural Workers Council, were sel ected this week. First prize of $25.00 went to James Mor ris, Route 2, Murphy; second prize $15.00 to Eugene Kep hart, Route 3, Murphy; and third prize, $10.00, to Burl Chas tain of Rt. 1, Brasseswn. Winners were selected from a group of fifty-two boys and girls who competed In the tree planting contest. Thirty-five acres of Loblolly pines were planted by 4-Hers and FFA members. Pine stands were Judged by the basis of liveabllity, sight selection, and preparation and spacing. Judges for the con* were: Harold Hatchett,County Forest Ranger, James Ste wart, County ExtenslonChalr man, and Helton Carmichael Assistant U. S. Forest Ran ger. Track Meet The first cross country crack meet of the season for Carlisle Military School at Bamberg, S, C? was run at the Orangeburg, S. C. fair grounds course Saturday, Dec. 1. Ed Parker of Car lisle walked sway with first place honors and anew record time of 9:35 for the course. Edwin Wells Parker is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Psrker of Hlwassee Dam. Cadet Parker Is the captain of the school's cross coiattry seem. He has been at Carlisle for three years and will grad uate in May. He Is also a mem ber of the Carlisle Military Band. The meet between Carlisle, Orangeburg, Brookland - Cayce, and Wade Hampton high schools opened as forty five race hungry boys sprint ed from the starting line K> begin a two-mile run that would put their weeks of hard work o a severe test. The course over hill and dale set tled the boys Into their running positions. As the last half mile neared, Parker and Jim Wietchi from Brookland - Cayce found themselves bat tling for the number one position. The lsst 200 yards proved to tell the tale aa Park er let forth a driving surge of speed to cross the finish line a full second ahead of Wletchl. This Is the second year that Parker has run track for Carlisle and he Is looking forward to a very promising season. Mr. Davis was a native of Cherokee County, a son of the late James and Viola Parke Davis. He was a member of Hiwassee Baptist Church a former teacher and had ser ved as clerk of superior court. Services were held at2 p.m. Friday in Hanging Dog Bap tist Church. The Rev. J. C. Winkler and the Rev. Wayne Crist offi ciated and burial was in the church cemetery. Nephews were pallbearers.
