Opal, Richard, and Steve Howell and the Employees of SUPER MARKET CHRISTMAS FEATURE Jesus' Death (Editor's note: This Is the fifth In ? series of six article; appearing In The Cherokee Scout condensed from Charles L. Allen's new book. THE LIFE OF CHRIST, copywright ed by Fleming H. Revell Company. Used by permission.) As they led Jesus away to be crucified, they took hold of Simon, a Cyrenlan who was coming In from the country and made him carry the cross. A large crowd followed. Including many women who mourned over him. Turning to them. Jesus said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children. For If they do these things In a green tree, what shall be done In the dry?" They came to a place called "The Place of a Skull," which In Hebrew Is called Golgotha. They offered him a drink of wine mixed with a bitter drug, but when he had tasted It, he refused to drink It. Then they crucified him, and the criminals with him, one on his right and the other on his left. Jesus said, "Father, forgive them: for they know what they do," Pilate worte an Inscription and It was put on the cross. It said, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS. This inscription was read by many Jews, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and It was written In Hebrew and Greek and Latin. The chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, "Write not. The King of the Jews; but that he said, 1 am King of the Jews." Pilate answered "What I have written 1 have written." When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they divided his clothes Into four parts and each of them took a part, ex cepting his cloak. The cloak was seamless, having been woven in one piece. They said to themselves, "Let us not rend it, but cast lots for It, whose it shall be." Those who passed by shouted abuse at him. They wagged their heads and said, "Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it In three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God. come down from the cross." In the same manner the chief priests mocked him, along with the scribes and elders, saying, "He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be king of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him. He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said. I am the Son of God. One of the criminals, who was hanging there with him, heaped scorn on him, saying, "If thou be Christ, save thy self and us." The other criminal rebuked him and ans wered, "Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art In the same condemnation? And we Indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss." And he sald,,"Lord rem nothing amiss." And he said, "Lord remember me when thou comest Into thy kingdom." And Jesus said to him, "Verily I say unto thee, today Shalt thou be with me In paradise." Standing near the cross of Jesus was his mother, and her sister Mary, the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing near to her, he said to her, "Woman, be hold thy sonl" Then he said to the disciple, "Behold thy mother!" From then on thst disciple took her to live In his home. From noon until three o'clock in the afternoon there was darkness over all the land. About three o'clock Jesus cried out loudly, "Ell, Eli, lama sabachthanl?" which means, "My God, my God. why hast thouforsakenme?" When some of those standing there heard that, they said, "This man calleth for Ellas." After this, he knew that everything had been accomplished to fulfill the scripture. He said, "I thirst." Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge, filled it with wine, put it on a stick and put It up to his lips. The others said. "Let be, let us see whether Ellas will come to save him." When Jesus had received the wine, he said, "ItIs finished." Then In a loud voice he said. "Father, Into thy hands I commend my spirit." Having said that, he died. At that very moment, the curtain of the temple was torn In two from top to bottom. The earth shook and the rocks were spilt open. Graves were opened and many bodies of the saints came to life and com ing out of their graves after his resurrection, they went in id Jerusalem and were seen by many. Because It was the day of preparation for the Passover, and bodies should not remain on the cross on the Sabbath, for the Sabbath was a holy day, the Jews requested Pilate to have the men's legs broken and their bodies taken away. The soldiers came and broke the legs of the two who were cruci fied with Jesus. When they got to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. One of the soldiers thrust a spear In his side, and Immediately Mood and water came out. An eyewitness who could be trusted told that this happened. He knew that he spoke the truth and others would believe, also. Jeaus' Resurrection (Editor's nou: This Is the last In a series of six articles appearing In The Cherokee Scout condensed from Charles L. Allen's new book, THE LIFE OF CHRIST, copyrighted by Fleming H. Revell Company. Used by permission.) At siairtse on the first day of the week, the women went to the sepulchre. As they went, they said ?> each other, "Who shall roll us away the stooe from the door of the sepul chre?" When they arrived they saw that the stone, which was very large, had already been rolled away. They went Into the sepulchre and there saw a yotatg man sitting on the right side, clothed In a long whits robe. They were frlghMned. He said to them, "Be not affrlghMd: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: He Is risen; he Is not here: Behold the place where they laid him. But go yotr way. Mil his disciples and Pa Mr that be goeth before you lntoGalllee: there shall ye see him, as he said unto you." They hurried outside and ran from the sepulchre, trembling In amazement. Because of their fear they said nothing to anyooe. Mary Magdalene hurried to Simon Pater and the other dtsdpie whom Jesus loved, and said n them, "They have taken away die Lord out of the sepulchre, and we do not know ?here they have laid him I" 1 Peter wui that other disciple went out and ran Mgether toward the sepulchre. The other disciple outran Peter and got there first. Stooping down so he could look In, he saw the linen clothes lying there, and the cloth which was about Jesus' head was not with the other clothes, but folded to gether in a place by Itself. Then the other disciple who had arrived first at the sepulchre went In also, and he saw and believed. As yet they did not understand the Scriptures which said that he must rise from the dead. The disciples went back home; but Mary remained outside the tomb, weeping. As she wept, she stooped down and looked into the sepulchre. She saw two angels clothed in white sitting there, one at the head and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. They said to her, "Woman, why weepest thou?" She replied, "Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him." When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, "Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou?" She, supposing him to be the gardener, said to him, "Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, andl will take him away." Jesus said to her,"Maryl Mary!" She turned to him and said, "Rabbonil" which means "Master." Jesus said to her, "Touch me not; for 1 am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethern, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God and your God." Mary Magdalene went and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord and what he had said to her. That same day two of those who knew Jesus were making their way to the village of Emmaus, which was about seven miles from Jerusalem. They talked to each other about all that had happened. As they talked, Jesus, himself, came up and walked with them, but they were prevented from recog nizing him. They came near to the village where they were going. He acted as though he were going on farther, but they insisted. "Abide with us: for it Is toward evening, and the day Is far spent." So he went in to tarry with them. As they sat at the table together, he picked up the bread and asked the blessing. Then he broke the bread and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him; and he vanished from their sight. They said to each other, "Did not our heart bum within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures They got up during that very hour and returned to Jeru salem. They found the eleven and those who were with them, and said to them. "The Lord is risen Indeed, and hath ap peared to Simonl" They told what had happened on the road and how they recognized him when he broke the bread. On the evening of that same day, it being the first day of the week, the disciples were assembled together, with the doors shut because of their fear of the Jews. Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be unto you." When he had said this, he showed to them his hands and side, rhe disciples were filled with gladness when they saw the -ord.
